Met a newb in my squad today, he had no idea what he was doing and kept dying and comparing it to COD.

I have had similar experiences the last few days, had a few guys that had been playing just one hour, and fresh out of the academy join a small squad I was in with a couple of corpmates.
They get the gist of the game (Just) but they do not understand the spawn mechanics, specifically how useful spawn uplinks are, the different weapons, the different suits, varying levels (I.e militia , standard , advanced , proto) and many other basic things.
CCP - Just hot fix the academy for now and make it last a LOT longer in terms of war points. I cant give you an exact figure but make it last at the very least a couple of weeks of playing battles everyday.
Also you need to revamp the NPE. Even just a few snazzy pictures showing off the weapon types and the dropsuit types with some voice overs.
Hell the community would probably do the work or even make a video if you just played it at the start of the academy. Or even better make it a button they can press so they can go over it a few times and get all of the critical info they need.
The fact CCP has let the new player experience linger so much astounds me. They dont need to do an awful lot! Just make the academy last much longer, and teach noobs what the different equipment, suits and suit levels and weapons do! That's it!
P.S - New few hour old characters being pitted against 6 man + full proto squads is seriously hurting new player retention rate. Make it so they leave the academy after they have some good battle experience and with a sense that they know what is to come ahead. With a plan for where they want to go and what they want to spec into. |

i agree wholeheartedly, throw more salvage at them so it makes them want to explore new options.... maybe even see if the CPM wants to spearhead CEOs to NOOB corps so the newbies have experienced officer explaining things to them.... |

A friend who is an avid player of COD, thought it was weird that this lobby shooter diddn't have a way to host a local 1v1 match. I then has to explain to him the background of DUST and what this game "is" because apparently it doesn't do a good enough job by itself....

Extending the Academy is not the solution. Making the NPE far better is. Implementing PvE with some short tutorials would go a long, long way to helping players ease into the game and build their character up a bit before the slaughter.

We're in no position to do be doing PVE atm unfortunately so a manual and more of the walk through would have to do for now...

So you disagree that extending the academy for the reasons of giving players more of a head start when they get into the game proper in terms of isk, skill points (and of course I agree better tutorials too) would not be beneficial? |

I hate to compare this game to HALO, but HALO CE kind of hit the nail on the head of how the NPE should be with its first little intro mission.
Basically PVE to introduce new players to the factions, tanking styles, weapons, vehicles, and fittings would really help to bolster the numbers of DUST.

Just the AI alone is a lot of work to make the enemies offer any sort of real tactical challenge. A manual of some sort would be useful and all the current tutorial would need to do is point it out.

Because vets were going into academy and adv stomping. So they shortened it to stop that, however it only made new players exit the academy that much faster.

I might not having concured with this a few days before, but now I think I can. I normally lone wolk (I am trying to bring a few friends to the fray). The biggest problem is the adaptation period. Dust has such a bad adaptation period, it really doesn't retain players if they can't survive the onslaught a few days and try to understand how things work.
I was hemorraging 2~3 days earlier. Now Im constantly in positive K/D or at least very high Assists. I didn't know of the efficiency rating what it represented, which upped my game. I'm starting to use tanks more often (mind you, to hunt other tanks, I'm too without skill points to hunt infantry efficiently, I started to know all the maps as well.
CCP needs to make a compreehensive NPE fast. Players need to understand that you might get buttraped a few days, but once you start understanding the game, you'll how much better it is, and by consequence, better you are as well. |

The game does not have enough people playing it to have matchmaking function properly.
They really need those new players to fill out server spots.

We're in no position to do be doing PVE atm unfortunately so a manual and more of the walk through would have to do for now... I honestly believe that a comprehensive multi-stage walkthrough closely integrated with a battlefield survival manual is the best bang-for-the-buck basic NPE. Best in this case means most likely to result in a positive new player experience, calibrating realistic expectations for new players and dramatically improving new player retention.
CCP needs to put their best storytellers and communicators on that walkthrough, and ensure high production values to communicate to the new players that CCP takes them seriously and is willing to invest in them. If it were up to me, those videos would be released in rough-cut form to the playerbase so we could check them for content and message.
After that, a series of supporting topical over-the shoulder narrated videos specializing in techniques, tactics, roles and teamplay would prolly also generate good mileage for the NPE. Again, professional production values are required.
I really don't think there is a shortcut to a good NPE - CCP will have to invest time, money and talent if they want to retain new players.
And lest we forget, the ultimate NPE and messaging from CCP to new players is the game mechanics - predictable, reliable and pleasurable to use goes a long, long way and the message reaches every single player with no futher investment required by CCP or the playerbase.
I support SP rollover.

No I disagree because of things I have seen does not support any other option other than we just need a better NPE and they speak better for the folks not playing or complaining.

He's saying, without saying it, that the retention rate in the academy is probably not much better, or even worse, than when the player exits the academy.
PVE is the proper answer of course, but then, where has that been for the last year?

Extending the Academy is not the solution. Making the NPE far better is. You mean back when new players were stuck in the academy for a lot longer, someone at CCP compiled stats which showed a lot of players quit before "graduating" to real battles? It's not a secret ;). This doesn't necessarily mean the academy was the problem, however.
Anyway, they should simply make the academy mandatory for the first few games, and optional for players up to, say, 50 000 wp. Best of both worlds. |

Extending the Academy is not the solution. Making the NPE far better is. So you're building all your arguments off of information that we do not have access to, and we're supposed to just blindly believe you because of this? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing here, just saying that this seems rather pointless to state. No one is going to blindly believe anyone no matter what credentials they have, people don't even blindly believe what CCP says.
