1. Following the setting we've been given, what do you feel a mercenary is? (In your own words.)
A mercenary? Honestly it depends on your outlook. This game revolves around mercenary work, true, but for me and my kin that's a minor part of who we are. A straight mercenary is someone without loyalty or purpose (Other than to make ISK). You'll find these players in elitist corporations. And don't get me wrong I'm not knocking it, it's a very viable option if that's what you like, however my brothers, sisters and I class ourselves as a family of soldiers. We dabble in mercenary work, but if we're doing it it'll be for a good cause.
2. What do you feel the strongest points of a corporation should be? I.E: strength is bonds. monetary presence, elitist values, clear goals or purpose, etc.
'Should' is very subjective. It depends on the goal of that corporation. Let's take someone like AE, now I know most of their players are there because it's easy mode with the best of the best and the ISK is good (Some are, not all, keep your panties on) and that requires a few strong points: Good leadership, a firm authority and hierarchy, disposable ISK and the talent to retain and harvest more resources. These kinds of corporations are good in long term, but players slowly drift away.
The strongest points of an actual corporation will revolve around, again, leadership, purpose, care for members, strength, determination, patience and durability. Corporations with a less elitist mentality who are willing to actually help players 'lower down' in the skill-tree require a solid and un-corrupt ranking structure to keep everyone in line. Clans often attempt this and become very temperamental as their leadership grow tempted by greed and lust for things such as power and money and start to USE their players rather than help them.
What a corporation needs to be depends on their ideology. What motivates them will shape what they become.
3. This is New Eden, where trust is a commodity. It's also something that is valuable because it is something that doesn't have to exist. A trustworthy transport service is worth an immeasurable amount of ISK is EVE for example. Being able to insure the safety of your assets in any way is a luxury not found often. How much do you all of DUST value Trust?
Trust is as valuable as it is anywhere, be it real life or the virtual. In a game like Dust trust is readily abused, as we can see with many, MANY fallen corporations already. The temptation to take that ISK, or to join that corp because their stronger, or to tell this guy this thing because he might give you another thing is indisputably strong among some players. However, brotherhoods are formed and once again within corporations the level of trust may or may not be so important. In my own corporation we have an open door policy to new members, so trust there is irrelevant as everyone is treated the same and not given anything to trust them with until they decide to take their membership further. If they decide to leave, fine, it'll be no hardship on our part. Trust in our corporation is important when it comes to our officers, directors, and ranking officers (Myself and 4 others). Our command is solid, and all of our officers have been tested time and time again to know we CAN trust them. Trust must be earned, as it is valuable and crucial to a corporations' survival. Members must also be able to trust their leadership, that is key.
4. How do you feel about Alliances? As a corporation, which is a business, would being in an Alliance be good choice? They may not shine a productive light on your corporation. Or in the worst case scenario, create a situation where your corporations merit is damaged by their actions. Do you believe they are worth it?
Corporations are not strictly businesses, not on Dust514 anyway. Alliances can create a bad stigma for the individual corporations this is true, however one must take into account the benefits of support and increased companionship on the field. More resources, more troops, more friends to play with and a higher wall of protection is often a very good thing, especially for weaker corporations. I see them to be worth it as far as PC goes, very few can make it out there without friends to help.
4. Unlike EVE pilots, we are mercenaries, soldiers for hire. Going along with that, contracts are what set us apart. Their payout, our trustworthiness and skill to see it through, and those who issue them are what matters in the long run. How would you all receive a corporation who's sole goal was the acquisition and completion of contracts as mercenaries? Would you scoff at their existence? Maybe you would see any goal other than personal conquest to be a fools errand? Would you even encourage their endeavor, seeing a possible investment in the future of DUST 514?
I would respect such a corporation, and there are many out there who do simply receive and accept contracts. To be brutally honest with you, most of those corporations lack players of skill and hide behind the 'mercenary' tag to avoid the fact that they can't compete in PC. Imperfects I believe used to be mercenary, corporations like that I view as an exception, however there are none of such a skill level and strictly mercenary nature anymore.
5. If EVE to DUST contracts opened up, do you think you'd be in a position to sell yourselves out? Does your corporation have the reputation required to do so? Not just in combat records, but in loyalty and code.
Sell ourselves out? The EVE pilots don't purchase us, we decide whether to aid them. As far as I see it, the ball is in OUR court. I believe my corporation has a strong reputation amongst the community both in skill set and our undying loyalty and resilience. Our loyalty and code in Burgezz is second to none, any EVE pilot would be lucky to have us I'm sure!
