They wait for foolish mercenary tankers to separate themselves from the pack before they strike. They move with lightning speed and are impervious to any know fire arm and vehicle.

They can withstand extreme temperatures and massive impact damage with little effect on their life cycle.

More recently during the more patriotic lamp posts actually volunteered to be living ammunition in the Gallentean Anti Aircraft super weapon tests to create the next weapon of mass destruction.

Rumor has it that the Incubus has some of this material in its hull, thus why simply tapping a Python with one causes it to crash and burn.

Here we see the lamp post in its natural environment, it has no predators to worry about and feeds on the scuffed paintwork off its most common prey. The lesser std tank.

Observe the Lampinus Postinus; one of ZX-2539's fastest spreading native species. It starts its life deep underground, as a lump of ore near a magma flow, near to the core of the planet. Slowly, through years of pressure and heat a small cylinder of molten metal forms. A rare specie of heat resistant fungus develops inside the metal's porous structure, producing helium, forcing the metal to rise and expand. Slowly, the rod grows as it collects more and more molten metal and fungus, until it breaks through the crust of the planet, usually by a human road.

From here, a strange chemical reaction with the large amount of oxygen takes place in the Lampinus Postinus, combining the living fungus with the inert metal to create a living super structural metal with a mind of its own. It proceeds to seek out prey; prey of its own kind, made of metal. It's first prey comes to it by accident and as it slowly absorbs its meal, the headlight rises to the top of its body, becoming engulfed in metal at the top. Now, with the power grid and generator of the vehicle installed within its body, it can power the light to attract new prey. Lampinus Postinus reproduces in a fascinating way; it controls Homo sapiens minds and makes them think that it is one of their inventions. They hook it up into their power grid and maintain its structure, meaning it no longer needs to hunt for food to survive. Instead, it absorbs its new prey, usually tanks but sometimes jeeps and the rare aircraft, and constructs pods filled with its material capable of interstellar flight.

Using the thruster of a dropship, it launches these pods beyond the atmosphere and into space, where they seek out a new home.

Some say the relationship between Lampinus Postinus and Homo sapiens is even symbiotic.
