Anywho, I'll agree that the current suggested bonus doesn't seem all that interesting or useful. But as someone pointed out to me, the Minmatar and Amarr Assault bonuses both seem to be sort of making up for one of the drawbacks of their racial assault rifle. Given the fact that we know the RR and CR are getting some changes in 1.8, as well as several other weapons, I don't think it's too unlikely that we'll see at least a few changes to all of the racial rifles, which will hopefully make the Gallente and Caldari Assault bonuses actually seem useful.
For the record, I'd personally rather that the Gallente bonus was to RoF for plasma weaponry, and the Caldari bonus was to optimal and/or effective range for railgun weaponry. But I'm gonna hold off jumping to conclusions until I've seen more of the pieces for 1.8.
For those suggesting a buff to shield extenders, remember that this is the Assault suit we're talking about. Getting a bonus to their race's respective preferred weaponry type seems quite fitting to me.

Bonus shields is not Assault territory. Bonus shields is what heavies are for.
You want 700 shields, go run a fatsuit.
I honestly can't think of a decent bonus for Caldari. It all depends on what happens to the RR in the end. I mean, that's kind of the Caldari thing though, right? Being stupidly long-ranged? Besides, the RR is OP right now with or without a bonus. Let's assume it's going to be balanced in 1.8, and then talk about a Caldari bonus that reflects that. Instead of trying to band-aid problems over and over.
