The laser rifle is not designated as an Assault Rifle, instead it is designated a unique weapon (at the moment) along with the shotgun, mass driver and sniper rifle.

Indeed it does, at the moment. Their is Evidence/Rumours that suggest there will be more such that
4 +ù Rifle
4 x SG
4 x AOE
4 x SR
4 +ù Unique ???
4 x L-AV
4 x Pistol
4 x SMG
4 x HMG
4 x H-AV
Which if this is the case then when the total roster of T2 weapons is filled we will be looking at nearly 40 different base weapons.
This is excluding, assault, breach or specalist variations. Including those, we could POTENTIALLY be looking at 160 distinct weapons, with T2 alone.
If T3 is to be as diverse as rumoured you would be looking at almost a thousand distinct weapon combinations. Which if true would be damn awsome.

Where did you hear this? Or are you just making this up? Because we've been told about the Minmatar precision rifle since at least last fan fest. Here is a concept art showing the Precision Rifle.Also there are three other weapons depicted here which we have no clue what they are yet.
