Obviously this system is already in the game but no-one wants op open up the messaging bar to see if a blueberry on the team has something important to say, and therefore blueberries don't speak, and therefore some crucial information can be missed, and in a big tactical game like this, that's a game changer.
The fix is simple, and like about a third of my suggestions it comes from metal gear online. Simply make all messages from matches appear in a small 4 line window in the bottom of the screen, and allow quick messaging so that you can just type a message, hit enter, and the message will appear.
This is a great alternative for players for multiple reasons, mainly being you don't need a mic, all you need is a usb keyboard which is alot cheaper and most people have them already. Also it allows players to communicate with the entire team and quickly, a sniper out in the hills watching the battlefield could just type in "3 enemies heading for D" and bam the team knows about it and someone respond with "our squad will take care of it" or something so the whole team doesn't get distracted to take an objective back after it's already hacked.
Also it solves the problem I've been hearing about with mic lag, when there's alot of people in team chat using mics and causing server problems, I don't know if this is still an issue but it still allows other squads to communicate with each other without a dozen people trying to talk at once.
Now what about mouse and keyboard users? Simple, designate a button to switch to text chat and not have the keys control your character, but otherwise have a way to set the keyboard to a permanent text chat only device so that controller users don't have to worry about accidentally throwing a grenade when they want to send a message.
This game is already big and is planning on getting bigger, we need a way to relay information to the rest of the team without crowding their ears with tons of voices or having to switch their coms to different channels, and I think this would fulfill that need very well.

This would add too much clutter, I certainly don't see the point and don't like to read spam that tends to clutter up the channels all over New Eden. It would be much more distracting in Dust than Eve and I have no time to block a **** poster that is spamming the channel while killing, repping and rezzing.

That's because you haven't tried it, and how would it be in the way if it's out of the way in the bottom of the screen between your health bar and your ammo gauge?
The message bar would be transparent for the most part so it wouldn't block your view, and would only appear if a message were sent and disappear a short time after, look up some videos of MGO before you discount it, trust me this game is much less frantic and time dependent that MGO and if I can send messages in a battle where the map is tiny with few places to hide and where anyone could turn a corner and kill you in less than a 1/4 second then you can do it in a game where you can go minutes without seeing any action.
MGO's HUD setup was similar to dust and I've never felt that text chat was obstructive or distracting even in a game where literally every second was critical and not just for the occasional freakout moments when you and your opponent lock eyes.

Random match that I pulled from youtube, 7:54 and 9:17 give good representations of how text chat looked
Now this is a very hardcore match between highly organized players and there is very little communication but the entire match goes without voice chat using microphones, that says something

This does seem like a good idea for those who don't use a mic.(including me), the only problem I see is how long it will take to type the message.

Prepare to be flamed. I did basically the same thread and the reactions were hilariously negative.
People on this board react allergic to text chat for some reason. Maybe they haven't played enough games to have experienced text chat in shooters. Reminds me of those people who are against chat lobbies in RTS games. Any RTS vet will know that chat lobbies are the lifeline that can make the difference between a community's death and its survival. Players who communicate feel more involved and are less likely to simply leave. |

As fast as you can type, and a game like MGO basically taught me how to type and do it fast, this game isn't nearly as hectic so if you know how to work a keyboard you should be fine, if not, well this is a good opportunity to teach yourself lol

Yeah I remember mag, but I never really saw alot happening with that command system, about half the people who were squad leaders had mics, and this mean you would need to switch comms over to talk with squad leaders and then back to try to explain it to your squad, and again the onus falls on players to actually have mics
Typing is instant and everyone can see it, in mgo you had a way to switch between talking to your team and talking to everyone (yes even enemies) something similar could be thrown in to talk between your squad and your team just to filter out noise.

How was MGO? I remember watching the trailer for it that came with MGS 3 and it looked neat.

Lol first comment I got on this was just purely negative, seems like people have the idea that there's just gonna be this big black box covering half the screen.
It's tiny, transparent, and allows more flexibility with communication, like damn at least ask about it before ya shut it down lol.

MGO 2 which came with metal gear solid 4 was fantastic, the most fast paced twitch shooter you'll ever see, huge variety of game modes including things you'll never see in other games like team sneak (where all players on 1 side are almost completely invisible), it had hand to hand combat like i've never seen, the ability to grab enemies and use them as shields, choke them, throw them, a ton of weapons including nonlethal, and camo that actually worked, sneaking and hiding was actually a viable strategy.
Something that I find pretty interesting is that even though the matches didn't get bigger than 8v8 there was still way more strategy than I even see on this.
And what led to this post is that no-one was ridiculed for not having a mic, in fact most of the population didn't have one or use one and you still get teams with an immense amount of coordination.
