Hello Friendly Neighborhood Devs! I have a Burning question for you but first the lead up to said burning question.
In eve we have 4 damage types,
Kinetic Thermal Explosive Electro Magnetic or (EM)
and on the other side of the coin we have the same armor/shield resists for the four stated Damage types ranging between 0% to 100%. which can be modified by armor/shield resistance mods that ranger between on specific type of damage (offer a better boost to said damage type) to ones that do all damage resists (moderate boost to all)
(Although we all know itGÇÖs impossible to get to 100% due to stacking penaltyGÇÖs)
i think the closet i have gotten was 93.5325% some odd percent and about 75%-85% on all others ship. But it was built to be a built sponge IE *i had no real Damage out put to speak of*
All four races have a Primary damage type and a secondary damage type for the most part examples *broken down to the respective race primary users of said weapon.*
Amarr GÇô Beam Lasers / Pulse Lasers GÇóEM (Primary) GÇóThermal (Secondary)
Caldari/Gallente - Railguns GÇóKinetic (Primary) GÇóThermal (secondary)
Caldari GÇô all missiles GÇóOnly one of the four damage types at a time *Per Launcher*
Gallente - Blasters GÇóKinetic (Primary) GÇóThermal (secondary)
Minmatar Auto cannons / Artillery *wildcard Weapons* GÇóExplosive (Primary) *Mainly but really depends on what ammo you have loaded* GÇó(Secondary) * depends on what ammo you have loaded* GÇóHave the ability to deal all damage types at the same time in small amounts install od specializing in one practically type of damage. Did I mention they have both the slowest rate of fire and the highest rate of fire in the gameGǪ
Any way and we have the different types of guns dealing specific types of damage
Amarr
- Beam laserGÇÖs do Thermal and EM laser Rifle
pulse laserGÇÖs Thermal and EM scrambler rifle
Caldari
- have missiles that deal all damage purely of the type chosen weather Kinetic, Thermal , Explosive or EM any missile turret - Flay Lock Pistol *its Minmatar weapon but still a missile based Weapon system*
Caldari/Gallente
- Rail guns Kinetic and Thermal. - Rail Rifle - Tank Rail Gun turret
Gallente
- Blasters which is also Kinetic and Thermal. Assault rifle GÇô tank Blaster turret
Minmatar
- Artillery cannons - all damage types depending on the ammo used not in game yet
auto cannons - HMG's Combat rifles SMG's all damage types depending on the ammo used Combat rifle
Not everyone, whom plays Dust 514, plays eve and knows of the balancing act you have to do on your ships to get a good pvp ship.
I would also like to point out that in eve GÇ£The greater the range the lower the DPS of the gun and the shorter the range the greater the DPS of the gunGÇ¥
However there is no one all-powerful slayer fit because everything has a counter just like the saying goes.
GÇ£There is always someone with a BIGGER STICK!GÇ¥
Example
The resistances will be taken from the Caracal Caldari missile cruiser in eve online
LetGÇÖs say I have a Caldari suit which is a shield tank and letGÇÖs say for giggles the base resistances for the shields and armor are as fallows
Shields
High shield hp Pool Low Armor Pool
GÇóShield Em Damage Resistance 0% *note for the most part in eve all ship have 0% em resist on their shields* GÇóShield Explosive Damage Resistance 50 % GÇóShield Kinetic Damage Resistance 40 % GÇóShield Thermal Damage Resistance 20 %
So naturally this guy is weak to EM and Thermal damage dilution you and turn your weakness in to a strength by adding a shield harder modual to your suit to tune you shields to the weapon flavor of the month to make the Kinetic/thermal damage done to you by the Rail Rifle a moot point or the combat rifle damage a moot point as well.

Also while your their check out the bonuses for each ship and you will see each ship has a specific role in the fleet I HIGHLY recommend checking this out if you are not happy with the current game mechanics. It might provide you with some happier alternatives.
But I Digress for now and now for the question!
Why donGÇÖt we have a something like this implemented for something that is proven to work and work well, or is it slated for further down the road to really introduce the armor/shield resists along with the different ammo types like what we have in eve?

CCP have divided the damage type in DUST by weapon class:
Laser (laser, scrambler, etc.) Plasma (assault Rifle, Plasma Cannont, Ion Pistol) Projectile (HMG, combat rifle, SMG, etc.) Railgun (Rail rifle, Forge, etc.) Explosives (Swarms, Flaylock, RE, Etc.)
simpler to deal with than making each do two damage types and tracking that. |

Consider that Plasma and Electromagnetic damage types are "hybrid", because they deal both physical and thermal damage: that's why they have the bonus/malus against shields and armors, unlike the Laser weapons which are focused against shields and explosive which work greatly against armors.

True but in the New Eden Universe we have 4 basic category's for ship weapons.
Laser turrets Pulse Laser / Scrambler rifle - Scrambler pistol Beam laser / Laser rifle
Missile turrets Rockets / Flaylock Pistol - Swarm Launcher - Small and large missile turrets Light Missiles Heavy Missiles Torpedo's Cruise Missiles
Hybrid Turrets Rail gun turrets / Rail rifle - Small and Large Rail gun's - forger gun Blaster Turrets / Assault Rifle / Small and Large Blaster's - shotgun
Projectile turrets Auto canons / Combat Rifle - SMG - HMG Artillery canons / Mass Driver
The weapons all fall in to one of the 8 sub category. but the point is having a system similar to what eve has so that the player can choose to set up their armor/shield tank to resist a particular type of damage.
IE
you choose either a well rounded Tank or if you feel like your being Killed too often by the weapon flavor of the month the play can set up a defense to that particular weapon type weather its laser, EM, Plasma, Kinetic or explosive.
However...
when you set up your drop suite to be heavy in one damage type you tend to be more subject to the other weapons damage types. so if the other play is smart he will realize "oh my guns not very effective on these guys let me change up my guns" and the player will adapt making a more dynamic battle field instead of everyone using the same weapons over and over because they kill every one really fast. |
