After getting stomped by a clan in a public match one too many times today, I've been getting extremely frustrated with the fact that this game has no possible way of coordinating blueberries without a microphone. (And even the microphone is questionable because I'm not anglophone and I've heard more than enough of people telling me that my English pronounciation is incomprehensible) No, I will not invest money into a bluetooth headset for exactly one game. And I don't intend to get a USB adapter for mine, considering that I sit too far away for a wired headset.
Anyway, there is plenty of whining about balance for this game. But many of issues - like the one of AV - would be instantly solved if I just had the option of talking to other players, instead of everyone running around and not knowing what the hell they are supposed to do when the enemy is starting to use HAVs. Why do I need to write a text message through multiple sub-menues to tell someone to get out of my dropship? Hell, what is a non-assault dropship even for when I can't coordinate a drop? And how the **** am I supposed to coordinate a two-pronged Swarmer attack on a HAV if I can't communicate? Killing a HAV isn't hard, even if they are literally immune to singular MLT launchers even without modules - What is hard is taking it down alone because you are mute.
Yes, I know that there's a chat system in place. Too bad that it doesn't even notify me about new messages and also needs multiple seconds to open. I have a keyboard. Let me do what every FPS even in the last millenium allowed me to do: Press a button, type a message, confirm. And then show it on the screen of all players on my team. I need nothing more. There's only 16 players per side, so it should be plenty doable.
Also, the removal of the barge before the battle just made this worse, because now you don't even have the downtime to squad up and talk a bit about your tactics.
tl;dr Solve communication before you attempt balance. |

Django Quik wrote:You sound like you need to either join a corp or at the very least join squads (squad finder helps with this!). I actually mentioned the squad thing. The issue with that is that you have to randomly join a squad during the game. It seems like most people don't even try to squad up anymore in pub matches, aside from corps, and creating a squad myself is pointless because no one looks at the squad list, anyway. When the warbarge still existed, you could squad up before the match and solve that issue by talking. I actually joined squads quite a lot back then. But when you are on the ground, there's always the fear that you might be weakening your team by doing this and the fact that most people won't even notice the messages.
As for corps... Well, I was a clan player when I was younger. But I don't intend to socialize in games these days. I just want to play on-off matches. I wouldn't be able to join into training or keep any schedules, anyway, so it would pointless for me to join in a corp.
But target painting would definitely be useful. There was also that Judge video where he showed a concept for dropship to infantry communication. |

Django Quik wrote: Fair enough, each to their own. But you should know that not every corp is about socialising and training and the sort. It's also just a very easy way to find people to play with - for instance if you were to join my corp, Dust2Dust, there'd be no pressure to play any set amount or join in training or PC or anything; you could play whatever schedule you like, however often you want; but because we are also members of an active alliance, there are always plenty of people looking for or running squads.
Now I wonder: Do you have a Teamspeak server? I can't use a mic on my PS3, but there's no trouble doing it on a computer, even if the language barrier might be an issue.
Quote: Moreover, mics are certainly not a requirement for playing this game. I have many corp and alliance mates that function just fine in all roles without ever having had a mic. Stop trying to run with blueberries that have no idea what they're doing or what teamwork is - even if you did have a mic, that wouldn't help you with them because most of them don't have mics and have voice turned off, so can't even hear you!
That's another reason for text chat. It lowers the entry hurdle for cooperation. |

Draco Cerberus wrote:@OP- It makes way too much sense to have a 1/2 decent mic. Other games than just Dust use a headset for communication (COD, Most Wanted, BF4, BF3, any other Multi-player game, PS Home) whether you play them or not. And there's also plenty of games that do not have voice support but support keyboard. Actually, there is MORE of those. And the ones with built-in voice support tend to have it half-baked. Third-party tools are generally preferred for that. I do not see your point.
I have a decent headset. It's not PS3 compatible and cost me fifty bucks. |

You can shoot that right back by asking why CCP doesn't make the chat system viable during combat. That's like pretending that mouse players should use the DS3 because CCP doesn't integrate them properly.
Quote: And seriously, why play a game like this without a mic?
Because this is not the first FPS or team-based game that I'm playing online. I am more than capable of coordination and making in-jokes via text chat.
I do not see a mic as a tool for casual pub matches. Text based communication, especially with strangers and through the game itself (as opposed to dedicated third-party tools) is a ******* hassle. I remember the day when I tried to play with a group of friends - Two northern Germans, one Bavarian and one Austrian. We spoke the same language natively and still couldn't understand what the hell everyone was saying.
I am very aware of the tactical advantages. I spent more than a year in a clan, playing competively. A mic is for when I sit down, take my clan mates and actually make a coordinated effort. For that, I'd be using a teamspeak server, which would completely nullify the point of getting a mic for the PS3. But I am not playing Dust competitively. I'm playing it casually, one or two matches every few days. And on those days, I want to rally the blueberries that run around like headless chickens. In another recent match, I used a dropship and had a blueberry with me. I had to park my DS and wait until he left it, because I wanted to recall it and I couldn't exactly signal him to leave. Give me a SIMPLE text system and awkward situations like this will disappear.
Seriously, what the hell is up with those responses? Are you too young to have experienced a time when FPS actually allowed player-made servers and text-based messages? I'm quite young myself, but you make me feel old. |
