That's not balanced and it needs to be addressed. Actually, aim assist is necessary on dual-analog setups. That's simply how it goes. It evens the playing field against mouse controls, which is a good thing. But that's obviously for properly supported kb/m setups, not what we currently have. |

No, leveling the field is not a good thing, it reduces the rewards of those who put time and effort into being good. That's the same type of strategy Mario Kart uses. Everyone goes around attacking curves properly, using strategy and great driving, then the CPU gives the slowest player 1000 powerups to zoom into first place.
That's wrong.
Aim assist is a problem on its own, and it's a bigger problem still if the intent is to close the gap between the skilled and unskilled.
And in the current input ecosystem, where one control scheme is being artificially enhanced, while another is being artificially handicapped... it's just unacceptable.
Seriously, console game developers have been wiping your asses so long you don't even know if you need aim assist or not. Levelling input methods is completely unrelated to rubberbanding. Not doing that is like giving players with 3D screens some kind of advantage or allowing people to increase FOV with Aurum.
Personally, I consider the whole idea of dual-analog FPS to be silly. To get the precision of a mouse, you WILL need aim assist. You will simply never approach the same kind of precision and speed otherwise. I prefer console-based shooters that are honest and just give everyone lock-on mechanics or something. Then you can at least balance the game around that instead of dancing around the elephant in the living room. DS3 users being dominant doesn't mean anything. There is more to play the game than just aiming. There might be other advantages to controller play, like better button mapping. Not to mention that it's possible that the most talented players simply prefer to be couch potatoes. Correlation is not causation.
P.S. A system where you need a joystick for dropships, a controller for frontline combat (because of auto-aim), a mouse for precision work (like sniping) and the like would be really fascinating. |
