In the market for a new RPG game to waste an overly large amount of time on. For some background I have already played the following to death on my PS3: Skyrim, Ni No Kuni, Chrono Trigger(PS1 classic - for the 30th or 31st time I think since its original SNES release), Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas.
I'm thinking about getting either Two Worlds 2 GOTY Velvet Edition or Kingdoms of Amalur. Though I hesitate on KoA a bit because it reminds me of WoW. TW2 looks like it could be fun but it appears through some research to have some flaws. So I figured I may as well ask for some opinions on people's favorites. I'm mainly a fan of open world RPG games, but if a game has a really good story feel free to make an exception. Please keep the suggestions to games on the PS3 as my gaming rig is now dated and cannot run the good new PC games on the market(sadly). |

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen:
-Great Combat -You can climb creatures like in Shadow of the Colossus - Fun Vocations -Some of the best looking spells in an open world RPG. -Night time is super dangerous -Monsters can be huge -Can range from easy to super difficult -New Game+ -Hard and speedrun modes -Monsters can be huge -Awesome dragon steals your heart -Create your own character who is actually IN the cutscenes -Monsters can be huge
Things that may be of concern:
Pawn System- While neat and an throwback to old rpgs, their "help" can get annoying. By the time you finish you will know that "Wolves hunt in packs" and everything "Tis' weak to fire!"
The Romance System- Broken. You might try hard to romance the tough female knight character only to find out that your true love is a 12 year old girl or an old man.
Fast Travel- Limited and there are no mounts. I think Dark Arisen gives you infinite fast travel though.
Story- If you want a game packed with story, leave. This is my story progression reaction in a nutshell.
Beginning: "Oh okay, a dragon stole my heart."
Middle: "Aren't I supposed to be finding that heart? What happened to those characters.
Later on: ...
Later-er on: ...
Near End: Wow yeah finally back to the main task!
Very End: WHAT!?! No way! THAT'S what that is? THAT'S what that means? Why is this all happening at once? I NEED A SEQUEL!!!

KoA is all about the combat/respec system. I have it and dragons dogma and trust me it has a worse story. I will admit some of the boss fights are fun. *spoiler maybe?* look up the golden Idol before you get too far into the campaign, the end-game weapons are better but they really help against the dragon.
P.S. Ranger FTW!
P.S.S. I got Dragons Dogma when it was still known as just Dragons Dogma, do I actually have to go out and get a new copy for the Dark arisen DLC?

If you're feeling masochistic, I recommend Dark Souls.
Great RPG for those who don't mind frequent death.
What's the difference between an immobile Minmatar ship and a pile of garbage?
The pile of garbage is more lethal.

Great RPG for those who don't mind frequent death. My friend made me fight Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts after almost a decade of not playing the game. It made Dark Souls seem a lot easier. I now have less fear and tension when playing it.
Edit: On the hardest difficulty mind you.

Didn't see it listed but might I reccomend dragon age origins? The graphics are not that impressive, but the story and game mechanics are quite enjoyable, and if you get the game of the year addition with all the dlc and awakening, kiss 90 hours of our life goodbye.
{Reccomend playing on had. The combat van get a bit stale and boring on normal. Nard makes you really have to manage yourself and your allied)

So I snagged Puppeteer today and if anyone has yet to try it I highly recommend it. Its different from what I usually play but I'm digging the style. $7 only if you are a PS+ member.
Also, snagged Enslaved premium edition for $5 which I understand is pretty good too. Man this sale is pretty wicked. Tales of Xillia for $10 also... got cheap quickly since this just recently came out.
Only downside is none of these is physical copy. I usually am not a fan of digital only media but for prices like these...
EDIT: Re-upped my PS+ for a year also. Found I had actually initialized by never actually downloaded both Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen and Kingdoms of Amalur sooooooooooo I'm all set now. Whoo hoo! Will treat these last two like rental copies I get for a year. If I like em enough I will probably just buy the discs later this year. |
