Really because IMO planetside 2 does it very well.

It sounds like they're going to operate very similar to the way cloaking did in Killzone 3, which is probably the best I've seen in a game, IMO.

Doesn't scare me at all, any ship in EVE can cloak and I think that any suit in DUST should be able to also.

Easy counter - cloak when you run out in the open. Done. Or wait for them to fire, and shotgun them in the face. Easy to find for a shotgun scout with a scanner since scanners will light you up you on the TACNET, even if you don' tsee them right in front of you.

They already said that firing a sniper rifle instantly burns the cloak out and you have to wait for it to cooldown before you can recloak.

I like the idea of the interplay between cloaked scouts and scanning logistics, going on alongside the main assault gunplay.
A bad implementation would certainly be game breaking, but I can imagine (and CCP seem to be describing) a perfectly reasonable implementation. I doubt it will be 100% balanced when it is released, but I'm relatively comfortable that they'll get there with an iteration or two.

meh.. if with the slight nerf in kz4 (you can only melee while cloaked) scouts are still putting up same numbers as before. and that was still less then AS.
snipers just have a magnetic pull for hate. like dog hair on a sofa. That's every FPS. Along side the shot gun only dedicated user. lol
You won't see a sniper before you die. and cloaking won't stop sniper for going into cover and then popping out again in different part of roof. |

Why? One sniper shot uncloaks you, so IMO the only real value of the cloak would be when the sniper is either reloading and relocating.... or when they are preping to fire this being the case I think you are talking about...they only get a single shot off before de-cloaking.

True enough. But if they implement it any thing like cloaks in EVE then you will Not be able to Sprint Cloaked unless you have Black Op's Cloak and they can only be used on special ships.
You can not Fire your weapons right after de-cloaking. There is a delay. But you can reduce that delay with special skills.
There is also a cool down timer after you have de-cloaked in order to re-cloak as well.

Yes, I'm aware of that.
The tactical scenario: cloak, snipe, hide or run until recharge, cloak, snipe, rinse and repeat.
Can you imagine a sniper doing this on one of those super tall buildings?
Dude, I'm a dedicated sniper and this freaks me out.

Actually this is an important question:
Does being cloaked lower your scan signature? Not to 0 of course, but reduce it enough that it provides significant protection from Active Scanners?

or that scout could be cloaked right in front of u ready to fire a plasma cannon at your face then re cloak after killing u.. and do it to the next 20 ppl.. or use a shotgun that way as well..
they have the ability to stand right next to or infront of u without being seen on the radar or your scanners. do they really need more? |

I don't have to ask why. All I have to say is that your logic is flawed.
HALO has had cloaking since the 3rd iteration and it is far from game breaking. You just have to implement the cloak just right so that it won't be game breaking. But if you don't want cloaks at all in this game, then I suggest two things for you.
1. Leave. It's clear to me you already made up your mind about this. Besides, it's coming whether you want it or not. 2. Adapt. The cloak, according to CCP Remnant, is NOT going to be full proof. If your active scanner is powerful enough, you will be able to detect cloaked players. Only Gallente Scout Gk.0 users will be the only ones capable of evading all scanners and we all know those suits are mainly designed for intel gathering and recon and they only have one high-slot.

Remember, CCP already has plans in the future to expand the maps up to at least 5 square kilometers. To give you an idea how big that is, the Titan Class Erebus is about 15km long. That's a big map. So once that redline (not the spawn type, the border type) expands, cloaking for scouts will become necessary especially when having to run around in open areas where there is very little cover.

Actually Planetside 2 errs on the worst half of doing cloaks, along with killzone and crysis.
Cloaks persist though getting shot, visual distortion range is about 3 meters regardless of speed of the cloaker, reticules do not turn red if over a cloak and to see a cloaker beyond the 3 meters requires a 7$ scope to which not every gun has access to.
The only reason why it feels balanced is how gimped the recon class in planetside 2 is WITHOUT the cloak. Most of the weaponry they have access is just plainly unsuitable for many of the scenarios cloaks can give advantage to an invisible person.
If we had PS2 cloaks, stealth shotgunners will be your nightmare because they can approach from the direction you are looking at and pop your head off.

I know all about sniper hate. My inbox is so full of hate mail, I think I need another inbox.
It isn't a good idea to let me have a cloak.
Imagine me on one of those super tall buildings. Counter-snipers won't even see me if I walk to the middle of the roof to recharge.

Why is everyone worrying so much about the cloaks? First and foremost we don't even have all the details yet (fitting costs, active/cooldown periods etc etc). However we do know:
1. Cloaking will have a shimmer effect that increases while moving. 2. Cloaked units can still be picked up by scanners. 3. If your reticule passes over a cloaked unit it still turns red. 4. Firing decreases cloak time.
Now IMHO the first three are more than enough to counter scouts, and since they are sneaky bastards that can be hard to spot as it is, I don't think cloak will change much apart from making scouts happy. I didn't include point 4 because I believe firing should be an instant de-cloak, but we will have to wait and see if the planned mechanic works or not,. |

All of these seem like good ideas, cloaks shouldn't be a win button but they should give you an advantage. There are a few ships that have CPU reduction bonuses based on skill as well as decreased lock delay and recloak times.
Until the cloak is in game and used by the public then all of the threads are kind of pointless because we/CCP don't know what kind of ways they will be used and if they need to be adjusted. All the planning and speculation about uses don't mean squat because until they are uses we just don't know how they will perform or be used.
