I remember first downloading this game, going into my first few games not knowing WTF was going on in the map - didn't have a clue about the game to starting to understand the philosophy to ultimately becoming CEO of a corporation.
I never planned on being a CEO, but to think about it - there would of never been an Ancient Exiles. or maybe a form there of but to what extent?
I am curious to know how many players are currently in a leadership role that honestly thinking about it now had no intentions of doing it?
Won't lie at the beginning it's what we call 'fun' before you realize it's a second job - which kills the fun factor when you figure that part out plus kills the desire to play the game.
But everyone makes sacrifices, it's nothing new. Anyways back to the original topic.

As a person who has led a very competitive and successful Socom clan, I feel the part about "second job" and basically being in charge of other people's entertainment. I didn't want the job but I took it because I didn't want the group to crumble.
Never again.

Yep I know the feeling. I had the same issues when I was playing EVE.
I joined into a Salvaging Corporation GÇ£Pro SynergyGÇ¥ slowly pushing through the ranks; first a salvager, then head recruiter, to opening my own office, got made an administrator then became a director. Once I hit the director part; every time I logged on, I was having to help new players out, sort out arguments or complaints, pay the bills, send mails, assign roles etc.... IGÇÖd end up being online for around 4 hours and only getting to play the game how I wanted for around an hour before I had to go to bed.
For some people being a director or having GÇ£the powerGÇ¥ is a joy at first but it slowly turns and inturn the game becomes stale and boring and feels like a job as you say. I was offered a Director role in a corp in Dust, that I was previously in but I declined it seeing as I didn't want yet another online job.
Just pass the mantle or start training a Padawan to some day take over when you decide to leave or take a break - its good to take breaks.

I am second in command of one of the lead corps within our EVE alliance.
I was the only in the alliance curious about DUST, and being a planetary interaction EVE player I thought it would be good to establish a presence in DUST for the alliance should the DUST/EVE link become a reality as many in the allliance are heavily invested in PI.
No one else wanted to play DUST, just me, so the alliance tasked me with recruiting DUST corps into the alliance.
That did not go well at all. The DUST only CEO's have no clue whatsoever how it works and when I told them they have to put one of my EVE pilots as CEO temporarily just to sign them up into the alliance EVE side, they would freak out about their corps ISK. egos were ruffled ... (LOL, billions do not even phase us in EVE, we had no intention of robbing anyone)....
SO... after about 6 months of not playing DUST at all I decided the only way to get the alliance a DUST presence is to start a DUST corp myself, knowing full well what I was getting myself into....
So, here we are, the corp is doing well, and growing, we are also looking for DUST corps that want to join.
The largest frustration for me is the weak link to EVE, and the fact that the mercs arent even based in the corps home station, something I find very irritating.
EVE alliance seeks mercs and corps!

Yes, I think I would have given founding the Obscurus Arcanum a great deal more consideration had I known of all the troubles that CCP was going to give me.Despite it all though we where respected by most without resorting to any of the unpleasant methods that where usually utilised.finally despite the dissolution of Orion, loss of many friends, the pure mental exhaustion and the rift that has opened after my departure post "Uprising" 1.0 I still say with pride that we HTFU and "got gud" |

Just wanted to know how everything transpired in Dust. I wish 90% of the community would get their nose out of the war room and step into a forum thread and take a breath of fresh air every now and then.

i always say ignorance is bliss, seen a lot of players ask for higher roles in corp, wanting to become and officer...
people never know how good it is to be just a member without any responsibilities, until they get promoted and have roles in corp and start working their second job.
I would not touch leadership roles with a 10 foot stick.
To all people who want to become an officer in their corp, don't.

The only way I can think of to be a corp CEO and stay sane is through total delegation. CEO has three functions only: select directors, delegate responsibilities to them, and arbitrate disputes between them. This does, of course, mean that your corp doesn't function better than those directors can manage it, even if you could do a better job yourself, but that is the price of your sanity.

my leadership began once corperation creation was allowed. fighting in the 1st dust tourny was awsome even though we didnt make it to the finals we then knew what the game was about at the time. We had a great run fun times and well not so fun times. I didnt expect to run a corperation at all and i didnt expect for it to go as far as it did because at the beginning the corp was there for fun we werent actually a competing corp until pc came out. i can say i was a part of the original elite run of players ive played with and against them ive hated alot of ppl and met a ton of cool people. hope to see u all in next gen soon o7 Trapperdon83~ original Ceo of Anon

Leadership positions are a tricky thing. A lot of the time the rank doesn't denote the merit. Some people deserve it, others don't. Either way, once you get the title, your responsibility level shoots through the roof whether you like or not; it's healthy for a player to at least experience it.
I think a lot of Dust players are still in an FPS mindset and make hasty decisions, burning too many bridges and not reinforcing the ones they need for fear of "blueing everyone" or some such silly reason that boils down to insecurity. Dust needs a lot more Eve minded people to run the political games, I feel and let the warlord style Dust leaders work the battles. This isn't to say that Dusters shouldn't try their hand at the political game, not by a long shot, but if you're a corp in PC and you're not part of an alliance and have no "friends", you might want to consider getting a diplomat

He took the risk because he plays eve, None of this bull sht we do matters in the slightest to eve save for fw so you can imagine how little he'd have given a toss if I awoxxed the wallet.
Luckily I'm not really like that, why the fk would I awoxx the last chance to have fun in dust for me anyway?

Agreed, CEO's who try to do too much, accomplish very little. Set policy, hire/train/fire directors for jobs then stay out of their way.
Additionally always be training people to be filling replacements for your director roles. They don't even need to know all the time, but pay attention to your people and you'll know who you can lean on for the jobs. This also has to include your job btw.
Avoid 'cult of personality' as much as possible. While amusing it is structurally brittle and can collapse quickly.

Luckily the political metagame in dust has yet to really materialize, but I do agree. Many corps would be well served by learning to diplo.

Only recently. I've always felt that I'm a great fighter, but would make a poor leader. Second in command I've always been, till recently.
Real life circumstance stepped in where My clan wanted to all go into GTA online, but our leader couldn't. It would be our first game in 7+ years of all of us in our clan playing together that the leadership changed. He made me leader.
*and you cussed him out. LOL*
I wasn't too happy no. The first thing I did was to set up a permanent clan name for us. Loy310 (our fearless Jamaican leader) is a peculiar kind of guy who changed our name for every game we went into. His thought was to avoid rep, being good or bad. And always have that element of surprise.
Me? I just liked the name I picked out and didn't want to change it. Everyone liked it and so we kept it. (DemonRonin is not clan name. that's my psn) Second thing I did was put Loy back as leader as soon as he was able to join us. heh.
Most of our clan are now busy with GTA, BF4. With me being the only member (like in dust514) left by himself in KZ4. But after talking to Loy and the others we decided to start letting others in our clan, with only me and Loy doing the recruiting. and so not since the only two girls in our clan joined (5 years ago) we have started recruiting again.
We refuse to make our hobby seem like work. hence why we viewed our play sessions as HUNTING TRIPS. We've fought and bagged many trophies, and faced more then a few gods. We've been called "cool" and have use that as our template. and have been called "tough as hell to fight against" and have used that as our template too. lol
I came from getting betrayed and kicked from a Japanese clan that I trusted. To forming up with RL friends, who have been together for along time. And our motto as has not changed since that first day "ALL ROADS LEADS TO US" And we try to live up to that. |
