I don't really think the shotgun needs more range, it is just fine in it's optimal. The Chrome SG was a bit ridiculous, I had SG Prof. 5 and Sharpshooter Prof. 3 back then, throw on an Allotek Breach SG and you were blasting people from about 8m away. After that, I think a range increase would be a pretty tough sell.
My proposition would be an addition of a Shotgun Sharpshooter skill. This skill would grant a 5% reduction to shotgun spread per level, in place of the current Shotgun Operation skill, which would gain the current Proficiency bonus of a 3% increase to RoF. Shotgun Proficiency would then be left with the standard 3% damage increase that the other weapons have.
With these changes: the shotgun retains the spread reduction, makes it easier to maximize the fire rate, and compounds the fire rate increase with a damage increase. These changes alone would be enough to at least bring the shotgun closer to the level of other weapons. |

The Time To Kill (TTK) for a Shotgun is exactly where it should be. The problem is that the TTK for automatic weapons is way shorter than it should be because they were balanced against Shotguns before Hit Detection was (mostly) fixed.
Solutions:
Option 1: Nerf automatic weapons. (The QQ on the forums would make the servers smoke.)
Option 2: Buff health across the board, and apply a proportional buff to damage for high Alpha weapons such as Shortguns and Sniper Rifles.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else, there is the Learning Coalition.

You are nuts lol, More damage? I can take out most people with two shots with the militia shotgun and heavies with 4 or 5. If they are tanked out protos it might be 2 to 3 shots, but no it does not need a 50% damage buff.

And 3 shot a heavy if he isn't tanked or if he is tanked 3-4 shots with dmg mods.
Also, get rid of the sloppy maybe my shot will register, maybe it won't thing that resurfaced with 1.7

My Std Heavy was taking thee shotgun hits to die during the HMG nerf and that felt about right.

I agree. I am a dedicated HMG fattie, and I want to die in fewer shots to a shotgun than currently.
Only seems right.
4-5 shots seems the current state now, and in that time I can usually mulch a Scout to death. Shotgun DPS should be equal or greater to HMG DPS. It was before the recent HMG buff, but now it has fallen behind.

You can't mulch them to death if they sneak up on you
And no, I don't have more specific info. I have played as both heavy and light. If you see the light coming then more than likely he will die(unless you are horrible at aiming). I he sneaks up on you, then most of the time you are dead, unless you can turn and react fast enough

I think CCP have got all the ranges wrong. Mass Driver is only marked to 40m SG only optimal to 3-4m Laser Rifle only go as far as 80m Yet Racial Rifles capable of getting to nearly 100
Its seems like our 'unique' weapons and our maps are designed for much shorter distance play than the rifles. If you buff shotgun range they will become king of the complex, leave as it is and anything less than rifle or hmg is pointless.

Optimal Range is 4m and Maximum range (prototype) is 22m.
I'd say it could use an optimal range buff but the maximum range could very well stay the same. Considering the weapon is technically based on spread/dispersion, increasing the optimal range would do nothing more than the applied damage at said range from the 'pellets' that hit; so in all technicality it's basically buffing the damage.
I've previously advocated for this and supplied a comparison to other first-person-shooters in this thread.

Honestly if you need 5 or more shots you are dead already when you encounter a smart player. I had players firing 3 shots in my (scout) back until I died (although this is mainly because of SG HD).
The shotgun should OHK most suits in the game. The only suit that maybe should withstand the SG is the heavy or pretty heavy tanked assault/logis... |

The SG is a fun weapon but its far from great, sure you can get kills with the SG but the SG will always be outclassed by rifles in its current state and rifles have a much greater range.
So to balance the short Range the SG should have a much higher stopping power 6m is not that much and damage drops rather drastic for this weapon out side the optimal...
I really loved the Idiea with the Sharpshooter skill. Those changes could make the SG a weapon that is feared again. |
