Hey all,
First off, its great that you want to be on the CPM, regardless what some people say it does give you a real opportunity to be involved with a lot of interesting things and made changes and influence the game. Before you really do decide ramping up your individual campaigns I though i would share this open letter as a bit of advice for anyone going for it.
There are a couple of very important questions that you will want to ask yourself. The most important one being "Why do I want to be on the CPM?" If the answer is basically anything other than "I want to help make the game better" You are probably wasting your time. There seems to be a lot of misconceptions, especially among the players who may not have played eve, that being in the CPM somehow gives you power, stuff for personal gain and a way to twist the game to suit your needs. I am just stating right now that this is just not the case, and I'll go into why a little later, what it DOES give you is heartaches, headaches, little sleep, early/late nights and having to wake up or stay up to conference with Shanghai. Its true that perhaps once a year you may be able to go to fanfest, but considering all the stuff that happens over the year, it is(at least from the community), a very thankless task.
Another very important question to ask yourself is "Can I stand the hate?". Most of the work that CPM do is behind closed doors and under the very heavy blanket that is the NDA. Because of this, many people will make up their own assumptions of whats going on and make baseless assumptions about people, usually because of an unpopular opinion you have or some off hand comment about your personality.
To those who are not going to run but still going to vote, the most important thing you must understand is that having a good personality doesn't necessarily mean that person is a good CPM, conversely being a troll doesn't necessarily make you a bad CPM. A perfect example of this would be The Mitanni, the CEO of goonswarm. He is basically the biggest troll in the new eden universe in charge of a massive troll alliance however he was one of the most productive chairman that the CSM has ever had, love him or hate him, this much is a fact.
Another important thing I wanted to address is that many people have been saying "vote me for scout CPM!" or tanks or heavies ect... this mentality WILL NOT WORK. A CPM is expected to have first hand experience on every aspect of play and cannot be seen advocating only for their class, this is largely done by the self policing nature of the CPM.
Yesterday in the "Jenza for CPM1" thread that Jason Pearson created, someone asked me a bit about what the CPM does do, Ill quote that here just because.
Quote:we talk to CCP basically on a daily basis, if, nothing else, to just chat about our day and improve the relationship.
CCP gets a lot of crazy ideas, some great some not so great. In this instance we provide both something of a sanity check to CCP and to give our feedback on the situation. The devs also cant look at the forum all the time, so if there is a very serious bug or glitch, its a great way to get their attention to it asap.
We also see dev blogs before they come out so that we can stop any phrases or anything like that which may create cause for concern in the community.
We also constantly talk about various ideas that the community has posted and things here and there. Its a very difficult, time consuming and thankless job but its worth it as the game and the community do benifit in the long term. A lot of the stuff we do if behind closed doors so its difficult to talk about specifics, it also irritates me when people say that I or any other CPM isnt doing anything or is a bad or even good CPM because honestly they dont see whats going on beyond the forums.
Its not all sunshine and bunnies if you want to apply for CPM and its not going to let you have infinite power either.
Now finally, about me and my plans. Honestly I have been toying with the idea of running for CPM1 if, nothing else, to spite some of the asshats that have been dogging me this last year, but I really am not sure. One one hand as, to my knowledge, none of the current CPM are going to be running, it would be very usful for the next lot to have someone who has been there like we had Hans. On the other hand, for various reasons that are covered by NDA, the next CPM is going to have a REALLY hard time, possibly harder than what we had. Its this reason that i know a few of the current CPM dont want back in (well, that and they are alll a bit tired of it).
So yes, everyone here should think very long and hard if you wish to run because it will NOT be easy and it will NOT be all fun and games. Either way, if you think you can take it and make a positive influence on the game, best of luck to you! I have a personal list of people I do hope will be running so I can vote on them but I will be keeping that private.
Kind Regards,
