So I've been a super dedicated logibro since I jumped into New Eden at E3 build. I have minmatar and gallente proto logi suits and the entire dropsuit core upgrade skill tree maxed so my O.C.D demon overlord has granted me permission to move onto a new class.
So soon as I saw cloaking was coming with benefits to scouts, I new where my next SP sink hole would be. It was also what CCP Remnant said in his recent blog:
Quote:To me, the Scout role has always been about creating a disruptive force on the battlefield. HeGÇÖs the guy that can cover enough ground quickly enough to get drop uplinks into the right places, hack objectives back, disperse squad members (nothing makes people scatter faster than a KC-amped shotgunner) and generally make a nuisance of himself.
As a huge fan of Sun Tzu and his Art of War philosophies, Remnant's summary of scouts and the advent of their affinity to cloaking tech really excites me and I'm looking forward to becoming a true grey cardinal on the battlefield.
I have 5.2 million unallocated SP which I'ma let accrue until cloaking and new scout variants come. At the moment I'd choose gallente over minmatar as I want to be a true ghost on the battlefield but I'll wait to see what caldari and amarr bonuses and slot allocations look like before I choose.
From CCP Remnant's blog:
Quote:Individual race skill bonuses will create opportunities for... cloaked scouts to scan further and longer than other dropsuits to have less GÇ£shimmerGÇ¥ as they move to have lower innate scan profiles so that they can be visually and electronically invisible.
I'm really hoping that gallente has the lower scan profile bonus but I think it may be the "scan further and longer" perk seeing as that's the existing one. I kind of speculated that minmatar might get the reduced shimmer to make getting in and doing their +25% melee damage easier but who knows. I've tried to see if there is any info in EVE regarding racial affinity to cloaking tech but haven't found anything yet.
Still, I'm leaning towards gallente for the four low slots because Cloaking is only going to serve certain purposes. With only one equipment slot it's not like people can ghost around and drop uplinks or lay REs as it seems that stealth will be an equipment item. I assume that the bonus to cloaked scanning is talking about the dropsuits inherent scanner due to this reason...but maybe it becomes an active mod...ugh I want more info
So yeah, time to start looking at what else I need to spec into. Biotics hasn't been touched yet so that's one area, I'll also need think about what weapons I want to use. I'm a geek so will be planning skill progression and figuring out how long it will take me to craft my next battlefield role.
Anyway, looking forward to joining the ranks of New Eden's scouts.

Matari scout's melee sucks bad, that bonus doesn't do much.

I want Scouts to get:
- 2nd equipment slot.
- Cloak.
- Nova Knife as default melee, tier is same as suit. (PRO Knives for PRO Scouts)
- Radar jamming. Enemies within passive scan radius only see enemies that they directly have a sight line on; no feedback from allied scanners and sightings.
- Cold blood; standing still makes them not appear red when the crosshair goes over them.
Basically, I want the Scout and Marksman from KZ3 in one class for the ultimate stealthy, disruptive class.
Many suits I've worn, many burdens I've borne, for the oaths I've sworn.

I'm very curious as to what Remnant plans for the scout role.

The Gallente has the longer scan bonus. Don't discount it though - it can be extremely powerful. If you use range amplifiers with a proper Gallente scout you end up with 70+ m passive scan range. That's a 70 metre radius within which you'll see everything above a certain profile. Not everyone is above that profile of course so it doesn't pay to become reliant on it but it is a helpful tool, and one of the most powerful weapons the scout has in its arsenal IMHO.
You're also correct in thinking that it has a lot of tank on it. You can combat fit it for a fair chunk of HP at the proto level - this is probably the best bet if you want to go head on with a scout, but that's not really what they're for. Regardless, it's very nice to have the luxury of an HP buffer. Personally, I fit a plate, a rep, and two range extenders.
The Minmatar bonus to melee is not worth noting. What IS worth noting however is the nova knife bonus. If you choose the Minmatar scout and use knives I promise you that you'll get some of the most satisfying kills in the game. If you put a kincat on the Minnie scout then you can end up with a very high speed. This is very useful in getting in close and stabbing things to death.
I know you're excited for cloaking, but you should really practice scouting without the cloak. It is difficult, but satisfying. It will also make you a better player. You have to remember that with the scout you absolutely cannot charge head on at enemies - this will only work against militia newbies, unless you're using the Gallente scout.

Welcome to the party, fellow scout.
Practicing as a scout prior to the cloaking introduction is probably a good idea, just in case cloaking takes a while to materialize, or ends up coming in a form that throws off your plans a bit.
You can get quite a good feel for things by picking up a standard scout suit in the Minmatar or Gallente loyalty store and throwing some dampeners on it (or just picking up a militia light frame and doing the same). It won't be quite the same as running the standard scout suit, but it will be as close as you can get w/out wasting SP.

We don't really know how cloaking will work, we all assume it will be equipment based on it being referred to as such but we'll see. I've always preferred it, and all active mods, in the grenade slot.
Active mods just fit so well in grenade slot (I know the slot would have to be renamed.) You have quick activation with L2, don't have to deal with the ridiculously cumbersome equipment wheel, logi gets no bonus to it, no nades makes a fine negative, and there is a limitation of 1.
People fear ghost remotes and gun kills if the cloak is anything but equipment. However, I fear ghost grenades if it does come as equipment. |
