Having made an alt about 6 month's ago and done nothing with it, I always wanted to try tanking. So over the last couple weeks I have been taking lessons from my tanker in my corp, he is pretty damn good and has about 19mil in tanks.
Well I'm having a blast and have a new level of respect for the real tankers out there. He started me out with the Milt tanks, made me skill into non militia mods, made a couple fits and off we went. He took the lead and still does in his boss tank and myself and another tanker to be run support and learn as he shows us how to run the map, how and when to turn, when to run and when to turn your hardener on and have a good fight.
Teaching me things like how a shield tank can turn and pivot faster than an armour tank and how to exploit that to take out a superior tank, with a little luck. How an armoured maddy can obliterate infantry when properly positioned in choke points and knowing how to move with your friendly infantry instead of waiting for them to support you. If you support your infantry with the "big gun" they'll help keep AV off your tank.
And lastly, helping me learn where to put those skill points to make the most effective tank I can make with what I have to work with at the time, Taking time and losing some of his own tanks to teach what he knows to someone who wants to learn.
I now have a half way decent gunlogi, got into a match yesterday, tank spam serious, my squad leader needed me to call in a tank. I was very nervous as my "mentor" was not in squad. Called in my Gunny with a basic railgun, Took out two gunlogi's with missle turrets, three Soma's, and the icing on the cake was a Maddy. I knew the map, knew where to be and how to get there based on my squads sit rep.
Six tank kills, mine survived, "with a lot of luck" Without him spending some time showing and teaching my tank would have been just another pile of space junk...
That my friend is what makes him a real tanker...

What makes a tanker, **** if I care. I started this game in May driving tanks, have been ever since.
Yeah I'm a tanker. I'm also a logi, a dropship pilot, an assault ect.
The fanboys will call you a noob and a scrub. It's a sense of entitlement.
Since you put your SP into something, that is supposed to make you what you are. But for some reason you have to be PRO at it.
People lack confidence / have ego issues, and need to feel special by calling themselves tankers. And putting down the others because they are not REAL tankers. It makes them feel good about themselves.
Da **** cares, it's a ******* video game. Go become something actually important to the world, like a doctor or something. That's a title that hold actual meaning!
Tanker has no significant meaning beyond the illusion people create about it.
Given the current state of tanks, it takes zero skill to be a GOOD tanker anyways. All you need is a sica with dual damage mods, and all tanks cry. Until sica pilot with two damage mods that doesn't know the map and where to look get's popped by a sica with no damage mods, better yet a soma with basic blaster cannon.
