So youGÇÖre getting Proto Stomped. Well get used to it with squads able to queue since now this is going to happen more and more. So you might be wondering GÇ£what can I do?GÇ¥ Hit the forums begging CCP to fix it? Throw your controller across the room? Quit the game?
None of those sound good unless youGÇÖre the one watching someone ragging, throwing the controller across the room, cussing up a storm. It is much simpler and cheaper to just BLOW those bastards up.
For what I have noticed Proto squads like to hunt in packs, they stick together destroying everything in their path. It is a great strategy; it keeps the team focused and helps them overcome any defense you might put up. But the main flaw to this is explosives with them group up as they are, a well-placed remote explosive will take them all out and there wallet.
LetGÇÖs look at two build I use to **** off Protos.
Amarr Logistic A-1 Scrambler Rifle GÇÿToxinGÇ¥ 1c0-9 Submachine Gun Flux Grenade Remote Explosive Nanohive Basic Shield Extender Basic Shield Extender Basic Armor Plating Basic Armor Repairer
SP 895,580 ISK 11625
This build give you a few tricks. The scrambler rifle is great at tearing through shields allowing your explosive to do maximum damage to their armor. Also its charged shot will can be devastating. Also it gives you range that I thought was lacking when I was using a mass river.
Now the Flux is there for taking down a group shields in preparation for a remote explosive. What I found that works is you cook off part of the grenade throw it, wait a second then charge in throw down a remote explosive them blow them all to hell. And if you die who care it only cost you 11.6k isk.
A variant of this is the Minmatar Logistics M-1, this variant will give you more speed but at expense of better tank.
Minmatar Logistic M-1 Scrambler Rifle Flux Grenade Remote Explosive Nanohive Active Scanner Basic Shield Extender Basic Shield Extender Basic Cardiac Regulator Basic Armor Repairer
SP 1,075,930 ISK 12,045
The advantage to this is that you are quicker and with the active scanner you will be able to see them coming. Helping you place the remote explosives in their path, maximizing your deadly potential. But be careful as you do have less of a tank so you will not be able to survive as long. But really if you can see them coming do you really need it?
Now both build are very cheap only 420 isk separates the two. The big difference between the two is the 180,350 SP difference. Before investing the SP on these builds spend some cash and try out the Aurum version of suits.
Now letGÇÖs talk about how to use the remote explosives.
First thing to learn is how to use the remote explosives. Holding down the R-2 will bring up the equipment menu. Using the left joystick select your remote explosives. Then release R-2 will bring them up. Pressing the R-1 button will toss out a remote explosive. To detonate the explosive you have to have the remote detonator out. To bring this up you have to press L-1 once when holding remote explosive or it will come up when you run out of explosives. Then press L-1 once you have to remote up to detonate the explosives.
Second thing to learn is choke points. Stairs, Doorways, Allies, Capture Points, now donGÇÖt just throw them down in hopes of killing someone. The best way to kill them is to watch what they are doing. If they are pushing towards a doorway or up or down stairs then you have a great place to take them out. The key here is getting as many as you can in the kill zone as you can. Also by placing them at capture points you will be able to watch the screen and when you see the point flashing just pull out your detonator, press the button, and watch those +50GÇÖs appear on the screen.
Third thing to learn is that even in death you can kill them. If you have your detonator out when you die you can still trigger your explosives while your laying there bleeding out. Sometimes you will get lucky they have moved in and are able to take out a few of them.
Fifth things to know is that these things will stick to almost anything. Instead of putting those on the floor throw them on the wall or on a crate most people donGÇÖt even bother looking for them there. But if youGÇÖre putting them there make sure that they face outward towards where the enemy will be. You donGÇÖt want to set one off only to not get a kill. Also you can place these on LAVGÇÖs if youGÇÖre up against a really annoying tank or another LAV. Call in a cheap militia LAV and throw a few remote explosives of the side and ram into the vehicle at full speed and you and the tank should both blow up. Now some tank wonGÇÖt die to this but if you get your remote explosive skill up to advance you can put both basic and advanced remote explosives on your LAV for a sure kill.
Last but not least the no effort kills, caused by people shooting equipment. This trick is very easy but takes a little of practice to get it right. When a teammate throws down a uplink place a remote explosive on top of it. If the opposing team comes to destroy it and doesn't use a grenade and shoot it they trigger the explosive, killing themselves and any other teammate that happens to be around. Same can be used on your own nanohives.
Using these dropsuits and these tactics you can turn a game of frustration and rage into a match you will remember for a long time. I still can remember my best remote kill match. The protos placed a spawn point up high and we had only one really poorly skilled dropship pilot. I took a ride and before he crash into a build jumped out and managed to get on their rooftop. They were so busy shooting the guys below they didnGÇÖt notice me placing 3 remote explosives along the length of the purch. I back off and set them off killing 7 and then moving in to finish 1 more with my SMG. |

The laughter you get from this will make any amount of loss worth it, and the hate mail you get makes it even better.
DonGÇÖt another dead body they rollover and forget. Make them remember you and the loss to their wallet you bring to them.
Happy Hunting.

Oh, have you tried a militia light suit with remotes and dampening? If you start getting scanned just get the hell out of there. And shotgun to the back of the head ain't to shabby either. Well, good luck!
I have been thinking on using a Shotgun, as it is one of the few weapons capable to one shot or two shot protos. But I wouldn't use a light suit as you need at least two equipment slots for the remote explosives and nanohive. You need your nanohives since the remote explosives only have 3, unless you have support.
Now if your relying on the shotgun and not the remote explosives that is different. As the remote explosives would be just a added bonus.
If I were to run a shotgun setup it would look like this:
Minmatar Logistics M-1 Basic Shield Extender Basic Shield Extender Basic Cardiac Regulator Basic Profile Dampener Shotgun Locus Grenade Nanohive Remote Explosive
This way I get some speed, some profile dampening, and also the use of remote explosives. The main reason I am so for remote explosives is that I love seeing 4+ deaths from one explosive. Now most of my kills come from Ambush as it is easier to get them grouped up.
