anybody else agree?
New Comers need to be quarantined from the 30m+ SP vets.. Other games such as Call of Duty might not place players in different ranks, but thats because its completely balanced (except for time played experience). In order for the Dust514 community to grow, games NEED to be tiered off in some way. Most preferably through SP caps. the order would work as follows..
Tier1 - 500k > 1m SP Tier2 - 1m > 1.75m SP Tier3 - 1.75 > 5m SP Tier4 - 5m > 10m SP Tier5 - 10m + SP Freemode - 3m SP + only
note: All tiers can enter tiers above their rank, but not below it. This is subject to change for balance though.
at 500k to 1m sp, players will have a rough understanding of where they want to be positioned in the game. They will have a rough understanding of what to aim for, and will have set their own goals.
at 1m to 1.75m sp, players will have a flavour of what its like to fight all other variants of the game. At this level, a few prototype players will be roaming the field, but not to the extent that people will be decimated or outmatched.
Tiers 3 and 4 will be the basis for equality. It will separate the veterans from the decent players, and will keep the game at a solid and enjoyable pace for everybody.
Tier 5 is the veteran tier. It is for those so called proto stompers that roam ambush and slaughter everything everywhere. I know how difficult it is to beat these stompers, Im in nyain san :)
Freemode, is a mode that any players over 3m SP can join into. It keeps the game interesting as it may be a completely unbalanced fight in or against your favour. This is basically what we play now, except there is a minimum entry requirement.

I'm actually all for organizing Public matchmaking according to SP. Think it's a great idea.

If it was all about equipment, there would be no sense of accomplishment. If you earn an amazing new piece of tech, its immediately matched by your opponents. That would take the thrill out of the game entirely.

Sorting by SP would alleviate some of the problem, but it wouldn't be quite the fix we need. Because we receive passive SP, SP's not exactly a great measure of where you belong. I've played on and off since the beta, and by your system, I'd be in T5, but if we're talking how much SP I've actually EARNED, I'm in T2 or the low end of T3. Having access to gear HELPS, but SP and gear aren't a good measure of player talent. I've gone 28/3 in standard gear and gotten shitstomped in proto in the same day.
The system we really need would be a great deal more complicated. Something that took lifetime WP, SP, and maybe K/D ratio into account, as well as where you placed on the killboard in your last say, 10 games. Ideally, everyone should average #10 and be getting sorted with better or worse players as needed. Course, even that's not without its problems, but I think it's better than basing it just on SP alone.

Dust is largely gear dependant. the experience should come naturally over a couple hours of gaming, and then advanced through days , months of extra gaming to tweak and enhance your playstyle. Trying to balance a game based of a human beings ability to play a game is unreasonable. We can only match based on what we can accurately determine, ie. Skill Points.

Yes and no. If gear is the biggest issue, then a better way than basing it on SP would be to just do gear restrictions, especially since certain roles require more SP to be proficient at than others. SP is a good way of finding out how long someone's played, and what gear they have access to, assuming they had a plan when they were making their character. It's not a measure of how well they do in a match and shouldn't be the be-all and end-all for matchmaking. Even if you don't take into account other measures of player skill whech we already have access to (Lifetime WP and K/D R) it's a good idea to balance based on how well someone is doing llately as well as where they should be based on SP.
If I'm number 1 overall in every match I play, I need to be getting grouped with better players, if only slightly. If I'm number 40 overall every time, I need to be playing with worse players, despite my apparently high SP. In a perfectly matched game, everyone should average number 20 on the overall killboards over their lifetime. While individual players can't track that for more than one battle, I'm reasonably certain CCP has logs of that sort of thing. Balancing based on a player's recent games as well as their SP allows somoene who wants to try out new gear from being punished too much, as well as allowing htem to swap back to their regular stuff without completely dominating. You don't have to balance the game around player skill, but you certainly should be balancing matchmaking on it to an extent. |
