When you think "Light" attack vehicle - you immediately think of jeeps with turrets, the LAV has not offered this as a valid role since... well, missiles were broken - back when LAV's all died to a single STD AV nade. Funny, right?
Well, it's making a small come back. Slap on proto small turrets and with a decent pilot/turret you can shred tanks who can't aim fast enough to deal with your acceleration into any direction you want. The problem with LAVs now, however, is the ones available - they're very limiting.
I dropped a few mil SP back into shield LAVs - mine has almost 2000 shield. Not that impressive, right? When you factor in it's shield recharge it gets naturally - it's quite good. But that's all you'll get out of it - all the slots and CPU/PG spent to make sure you don't get OHK by rails and other forms of proto AV.
In the past, at the very least, if you wanted to be a LAV pilot you could at least run around the field a bit if you spent 4-5mil SP investing into it - now those days are gone. All LAV's are sitting ducks to dedicated AV, which is how it should be, but not so ultimately. LAV's shouldn't have a 'hard counter' because there speed and flexibility with movement makes up for it's weaknesses, but with forges on roofs and swarms nearly spammable, one volley launching after the next, LAV's aren't viable for anyone but 20mil SP vets who just need something to get from A to B with.
Ultimately: The LAV is just steps away from being in a great spot. Taking away the LLAV variants without explation was a pretty ****** move to those of us who found enjoyment with LAV - but it's even shittier to know I spec heavy first, then LAV. Am I masochist or something choosing the two most abused by CCP roles in the game? Lol
LAV's get a 6/10 from me this patch. The improvements were nice - but they're stuck as a one trip pony vs competitive play.

I suspect logistics will be a MAV role, and specialized LAV roles will be
* scout (low scan profile, zippy but fragile)
* assault (an actual small gun platform)
