When I'm running with a pair of one of my corpmates, the two of us usually throw down between the two of us ten droplinks and a dozen or so nanohives in an area with a supply depot, not even counting the RE spam, all in a matter of seconds.
It makes a hell of a fortress that even random blueberries gravitate to and defend, and is priceless when against real competition from real squads. I can't say I see the problem with equipment spam since I have to do it in a small scale in order to survive against big corp squads rolling a match.
The lag is an unfortunate side-effect sometimes, but at least for me even with dozens and dozens of links and hives all in one place it is barely noticeable in pub/FW matches, and having so many droplinks and hives and RE littering the place is one hell of an edge that I just don't see the sense in abandoning.
Sometimes the spam occures when a few random pairs of people like me throw down on a location and then a few randomers get the clue and decide it is a great idea and follow example, and I don't think we can reasonably expect that to stop happening considering how few people read the forums and how few of that fraction care to abandon an edge.
Yes, damnit, I play to win. The whole point of Public Contracts is to earn SP, and for FW the whole point is to Win a match, and equipment helps both goals rather well.

Only if it applies to one side and not the other, as the lag effects everyone including the people who cause the equip spam, it goes from "cheating" to just "idiotic."
I would like to see a reduction in the lag personally, but my issue with this whole issue is that currently there is a massive advantage to using a crapload of hives and REs and derplinks in one area even if there is zero lag and thus I'm going to do it.
