DUST 514 - AIM ASSIST
So does aim assist really matter. I think it does but why listen to me when you can have a video. Many people can say what they want about aim assist being there for balance between DS3 and the KB/M but the truth is that the people that do not use KB/M have glorified it. I used DS3 most of chromosome and started using KB/M in late chromosome early uprising and I have had the same performance. The only thing I can say for the KB/M is that I can snipe better but apart from that there really is nothing much to say. I've squadded with people; before aim assist mind you, that where 100 times better than most people I see playing with aim assist. The really interesting thing is that these people where not a rare sight.
Aim assist in itself is traction based, this means that when you pass over a target it will slow down for a bit. It also has some elements of stickiness and bullet magnetism. This threesome creates a species of player that rely on the mechanic to aim rather than learn to aim themselves. It creates a player that is enslaved by a false sense of accomplishment and entitlement, abusing a mechanic that was meant to aid in the path to success instead of paving it.

The oddity with this is that you actually don't have to aim for aim assist to function. The less you aim the better.

Convince me that you are not using sensitivity 0 settings and quietly moving mouse back and forth/analogstick. Because this is not the AA that I know of.
LOL Post.

The friction and adhesion i can live with, ideally maybe toned down a notch.
The bullet magnetism though(i.e. hitting when you crosshairs are not on tagert), that's gotta go. It pushes DIST from being a game working on improving its FPS mechanics to a game that is full of interstellar cheese. We won't have any credibility as a shooter community so long as things are like this. Sad but true.
Speculation: Thinking that the bullet magnetism was most likely added for the non-automatic rifles/handguns. I think it was in 1.7 that the SCR seemed to start hitting unusually well. It would be interesting to see if the bullet magnetism applies to more than just a single shot(as shown in your video), i.e. can multiple off-target bullet magnetism hits be shown for automatic weapons fire?
One last point on rationalizing AA with a kb/m balance argument: For now, i agree with you OP, but that's only because the implementation of kb/m is gimped. If kb/m ever start working like we all know they should, then imo AA will be a flat out necessity.
We also have to understand that when we play other FPS games on the PC with a KB/M; most of them have AA. SO maybe some of the things we might think are how a KB/M should function is also a lie because of AA.

The oddity with this is that you actually don't have to aim for aim assist to function. The less you aim the better. I have performed the videos said experiment and I get 0 traction at all with aim assist on. Now oddly enough if I turn aim assist on and I get killed and/or bleeding out my client then starts tracking as like in the video. Turning it off stops the behavior but this behavior is only relevant while Im dead. Stand still hands off thumbs aim stick and well in the similar ranges shown in the video and no repeat performance on all rifles I have. As in previous builds it also likes to be attracted to dead people and spawning people and tracks them accurately until they spawn or despawn. Bullet Magnetism is in effect on my client I have hit people I was not supposed to it doesn't seem to work around corners thankfully.
The game requires that you at least fire your weapon while moving your right joystick once, to activate AA. At least that's what I have encountered. While switching from KB/M I have to move my right joystick while shooting at least 1 or two shots , bursts etc, to get AA to engage.
