I've done plenty fine for myself.
Only time you have to squad is PC, and I can't play that because I never get more than 3 frames per second. Getting a ps3 slim in a few days, so maybe that will change, but you only "need" a squad if you need people to cover up the gaps in your gameplay.
You by no means "need" a squad. Even if you come up against full proto squads, which I often do, you just change around your tactics.
Plus, when I do end up running with a squad, I usually feel like this

If you have 16 people running solo vs people in squads it's not going be effective a vast majority of the time.
I'm not being argumentative, I'm just saying you don't need to play with people to enjoy the game.
