as a professional gunner and pilot in training ive noticed that hardeners and situational awareness are the only things that will save your ship.
pythons particularly have be careful of the railgun, always checking to make sure the enemy redline is clear of them and only engaging targets while the hardener/s are not only off cooldown but also active.
keep in mind that the assault dropships are a specialisation, and more expensive then say the myrons (the dropship equivilant to the std tanks)
you can run VERY cheap myrons if you have gunners handy and dont mind not having your own gun, it helps to be squad lead for the orbitals, and the extra WPs to make up for it.
even having a single gunner who is willing to split the cost of the ship 50/50 in a myron makes the cost of the dropships negligable |

my ADS is faster....
get better gunners :P
my first two games back into ADS in 1.7 were 29-0 and 30-0 games...
as a gunner in a 3 man ADS team weve gotten 40+ kills as a group in a single dropship
killed many many many tanks |

this!
dropships are awesome at AV hunting, any dropship with a single gunner and a team of AV granade/flux toting AV infantry are instant tank killers, no escape.
just an ADS with a single gunner will take out a tank easily when its hardeners are on cooldown and have the mobility to track it while it runs away.
air dominance is definatly an effective anti tank stratagy now. |

As for tank hunting.... for anything but a militia tank with a terrible driver, its almost mathematically impossible for an ADS to take down a tank solo, well maybe shield tanks can be destroyed outright but an armor tank can for the most part just soak it up, not something that bothers me honestly.
tell that to the tanks i blow up
