Yeah I think you are pretty spot on. To me it looks like one of the modern M16 variants - like M4 for example, that has some unnecessary extra metal pipes welded onto it.

Just because it behaves like the SMG doesn't mean it has to look like it. Visual variety is always better.

I hold this sentiment to be true. I don't think weapons should be built off each other in that manner.

They have had this art done since Beta. It was always supposed to be a similar build to it. Look at the variant's for the minmatar weapons they have.
