What happened to the Gauss Rifle?
Was it scrapped in favor of the Rail Rifle, or will all the factions be receiving two AR types?
I want to know. I need to know. Please tell me, CCP!

The gauss is old, very old. In fact, it's one of several short animations to advertise for the book Templar One, not so much for dust, which wasn't even in (or had just started) closed beta back then iirc.

A Gauss cannon and a rail gun are almost the same thing. Rail guns use parallel rails along the projectile's path to accelerate it and Gauss cannons use coils around the projectile path. The wiki articles have pictures: rail gun and Gauss cannon.
I guess the RR has replaced that Gauss gun. Although that looks much cooler than the RR. The RRs look like you could break them over your knee. |

Each race needs a heavy av weapon and a anti infantry weapon.......so caldari hmg variant?.....could be cool....give it a fire rate a little slower than the RR and give it more damage but have it have a 1 sec charge time and a overheat a little harsher than the ascr?.....give it quite a bit of kick too I mean it is a heavy weapon....I'd use it to suppress enemies at long range ant pick off wounded reds |

You know how there's two primary weapons for each race now? More or less...
Well....how about a 3rd generation of weapons. Not like the rifles, but like a LMG. A suppressive, support role weapon. You'll run slower, but you'll be vital to locking down positions, mowing people down, etc...
People with rifles will usually get the ability to run from cover to cover and pick of the enemy. The LMG or 3rd generation would be in the sort of back, suppressing with steady bursts and maybe getting some kills.
So....maybe this would be like a Caldari LMG?
I feel like they shouldn't scrap it. It's a sexy looking gun.

I wished they used the gauss rifle model for the raill rifle. The current RR model looks so boring and predictable rifle.

Imho, the Killzone Railgun thing looks even more like a proper caldari arm than the Rail Rifle (which i do like, mind you). Seing it in that early trailer made me immediately angry as it was exactly what I imagined the RR to be; minimal, functional, eerily similar to a Naga.

I like the Heavy Barrel look on the Rail Rifle, but it is pretty bland. Maybe add some minor texture details? Sort of like how Shotguns have CreoDron printed on the side, it'd be cool if RRs had Kaalakiota or something like that printed in white across the barrel (In small text, as to make it not look too ugly).
I'd like the scope to be a little bit less BIG, and actually like a part of the gun. Modern-day red dot sight? http://images1.opticsplanet.com/365-240-ffffff/opplanet-sightmark-ultra-shot-sight-qd-digital-switch-red-dot-sight-sm14000.jpg Or maybe a more open red dot sight would be just as cool. http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/SLR-Red-Dot-Sight3-540x405.jpg
Either way, I want more minor details. Don't change the gun at all, just make it have a little bit more... Personality. I guess we shouldn't be complaining though, we need to remember that the Caldari have always been the "bare-minimum" class. It's why their suits have minimal plating.

message from Godin: Gauss tech in New Eden is slightly different, as it packs a lesser punch but is easier to maintain and is lighter. It's still considered a railgun.
That being said, the Gauss Rifle and Rail Rifle are 2 different weapons. Gauss Rifle is more like a LMG, and would be a heavy weapon due to its high weight and recoil. |

Yeah, my lore knowledge is very superficial. Pardon me me if there's in-canon stuff that paints a different picture.
Now the 2 (typo?) ships. Both the Astero and the Stratios give bonuses to drones and the Astero lacks any bonus to turrets (or to anything offensive for that matter). So while they can and do use Turrets, they don't seem to focus on them too much. Based on those ships i wouldn't expect them to produce their own unique weapons over the other factions.

Please tell me, CCP! Look it up on wikipedia, another name for a railgun is 'gauss gun,' so a proper alternative name for a rail rifle may be 'gauss rifle.' Yes Railguns are real. The US Navy recently released a public video of them testing one. The projectile will be able to hit a target from 200 miles away. That being said, the railguns on dust dont shoot far enough if you want to compare it to real life. |

Gauss gun is an alternate term for coilgun. Coilguns and railguns are similar in that they both use electromagnetism to propel a projectile. Coilguns and railguns are not technically the same, however.
