I had always thought the match-making was awesome, I'm having a blast playing against nyan, imperfects (for their short return) outer haven, my own guys-necr0mongers and a few others. I figured, well, I'm doing great with just militia gear against these people, match making must be just fine.
Or so I thought.
Last night a few friends were over visiting so we got them suited up with brand-spank'n new accounts, quickly adjusted all their settings and walked them threw everything. In one match they went from negative to king of the academy. They were feeling on top of the world, having a good time. Good times don't last, however.
The next match they are in regular match making. They decide to try an ambush, and they are placed against the before mentioned corps on their very first match. They get utterly stomped, and it was upsetting to watch. I figured they would get some-what equally sp'd enemies, but instead they were going against some of the oldest players in the game and were getting wrecked after doing so well not even minutes before.
What is the word on match making? I would so much want an easier transition from the academy than step out the door and then eat pavement.

Match making? In ambush you're lucky if the server doesn't spawn you UNDER the treads of the nearest tank-stomper.
Of course, it could just be that the majority of people playing are the diehard fans.

From what I know, matchmaking is a function of your squad's performance over the time that it has been playing as a unit in an evening. Its unkown if it corresponds to a squad leader, or just the squad as its created, or how it passes on its inherited traits.
What this means is that your first few matches under the matchmaker will be fairly random in order to 'tune' your matches. Then if your squad stomps a few, it should put you in some more difficult settings.
Imagine the problems here though...
If you aren't in a squad it becomes very difficult to attribute the success/failure of a match to smaller units of players. It would be difficult for the matchmaker to take a sniper that went 8/0 three times in a row on a losing team and really say that he contributed significantly to the success of his team. Conversely, a squad that collectively went 85/11 and wins 80% of their matches can be easily attributed to be the agents of success for their team.
Therefore, I really believe that the most 'fair' matches will be with those squads that stick together. You are more than likely going to be in more or less random assignments as a solo player.
Tl;dr - The matchmaker doesn't do well matching solo players because their actions are hard to attribute to a matche's success or failure. |

This game is never going to see anything but sub 5k numbers online as long as getting pub stomped and horrible matchmaking are the hallmarks of the new player experience. I've introduced close to a dozen players to Dust from other games and every one of them enjoyed the game up until they were thrown in with 12m SP proto-wearing vets. Adequate matchmaking should have been a priority on day one, not a year down the road. I give credit to CCP for improving the game in many aspects, but they get a big fat "F" for failing to work on new player retention.
And before some mongoloid pipes up and talks about the "New Eden Experience" being cruel to new players in EVE, fighting horrible UI is nowhere remotely similar to constantly getting gang-raped by protobears. |

The previous poster had suggested that the match maker evaluates squads, perhaps newberries may be auto-placed into newberry squads whenever they que up for a match. The match-maker can then watch the newberry and evaluate him against his squad, attempting to place him in squads that reflect his skill level, which then place him in games that reflect the squad's skill level.
After a week or so, it stops placing him in squads with a short, mandatory walk through of how to use the squad finder. Or, there could be an 'auto-squad' option in the squad finder that attempts to place you with equally evaluated players.
