yes, they should be able to take on multiple enemies, BUT not out in the wilderness where they can be out-strafed and hit from range. in a chokepoint (i.e. a hallway/small room/stairs by objectives) where movement is restrained, a heavy will dominate. why? they're a DEFENSIVE ROLE. they shouldn't be flopping all over the map.

Heavies are not just a defensive role in the exact same way that logis aren't just a healing role, and scouts aren't just a spotting role.
Any good player will just hedge out a heavy, either forcing him to sit in his spot until you bring in backup, or making him come to engage you, and inevitably die.
unless you left flanking routes open, it shouldn't matter.
while it's true that suits can be "whatever they want", some are obviously better equipped to be a certain roles and as such should be that role more often than not. or you can be that shotgun heavy and be utterly useless.
if you're pinned down in a spot, unless your squad is busy you should probably holler for some support, and if you follow the enemy out to their position then you're just being stupid.
