When we just glance at the world and compare to a couple of years ago, we don't see an extreme difference, but there is.
Every single field of technology has leaped hurdles in just a decade. Let's just look at medical advancements. We have developed the ability to rebuild internal eye structures with lasers, managed to use nerve impulses to control prosthetics and we just- just managed to be able to print organs.
What about architecture? We are building cities and buildings at rates that are ridiculous to imagine. The largest sky scraper ever is set to be built in just 7 months. It will have more than 30,000 people, 104 elevators and multiple schools and hospitals.
How about the military? The USA already developed a direct energy weapon named the Phaser, it is a laser rifle that temporarily blinds assailants at long range. The US military plans to have an exoskeleton assisted, bullet proof suit that looks like the Spartan armor from Halo. The South Korean Army has integrated into their arsenal a Rifle/grenade launcher, it has one barrel for regular bullets and one barrel for electronic assisted grenades that use operator input to explode at specific distances.
Space? Japan, Russia and other countries say they will have a lunar base by 2025.
Also communication is at an all time high. Ideas have not been as widely conveyed since the Hellenistic Empire, that was left as the legacy of Alexander the great.
I wish I could convey this better but I cannot without writing an essay. To put it simply, technology that, seemed hundreds of years away in the year 2000 are here now.
The Sci-fi of yesterday is today. It is time to make new "impossible" technology for sci-fi. We need new goals.
We are ready.

I need to go out to the country to actually see the stars. Too much light pollution at night. Better bigger buildings to house an ever growing population that we cannot economically sustain? a third of the world is living hungry. technological advancements motivated by greed or gain , which is not really illogical but just disappointing. women getting fake boobs suck. the stuff taco bell puts in their tacos does not make it a "real taco" Chivalry has been dead for a while. Despite people texting more, chances are you still talk to as many people verbally as you used to. Better weapons will always be and have always been. Light pollution does suck. No country has ever been able to sustain everybody, ever. Also, people have always lived in poverty. Technology has almost always been pushed by the military or greed. Fake boobs do suck. Meh, still like Taco Bell.
