CCP,
I'm sure that you test the game before you release a patch.
But I doubt very much that you PLAY the game before each patch.
I doubt that you have had an in-game goal in your mind that you really want to achieve, and have had to push through Dust's mechanics to achieve it.
This isn't a dig against CCP, but the reality is that this kind of desire can only come from dedicated players, and it's unlikely to be fabricated within your offices.
I think the time is quickly approaching where it would be in your best interest to capitalize on a willing player base and let them test out patches before release.
Please add the Dust infrastructure to Singularity so that we can help you identify issues in game builds before the general public sees them.
Quality is essential to success in a crowded market, and we want to help you succeed.
Thank You.

Malkai Inos wrote:CCP has said on multiple occasions that a SISI client is on their personal wishlist.
The problems are rather on the technical and contractual side. Sony would have to accept unstable software running on their console and connecting to their servers.
Until CCP figures something out with sony, i don't think a SISI client is going to happen.
I'm sure it's on their list, but given the quality of releases and the community reaction to some of the design changes, I think it needs to be moved up on the list.
I don't think the test builds will be any more unstable than what they are putting out right now, and the interaction with Sony's servers is probably limited, and can be further limited in the test environment (removal of real money purchases, for example). Whatever agreement they made to let the Dust Beta happen can be made again for the Dust Patch Preview.
As far as the technical aspect, if it is currently a problem to chuck out a test build for pubic consumption, then making traction on this initiative will also force them to revamp their build system to produce consumable builds at a faster, more reliable pace, which will in turn let them test earlier and more often, which in turn will lead to better patches. |

CCP would love to do this. They just can't because Sony doesn't want software in the PSN which is able to blow up consoles. Which is very understandable. Because it would hurt Sonys reputation.
What are you talking about? The existing "production" Dust client already crashes consoles on occasion. Same with a bunch of other software on PSN.
The idea is that we the players would test for exploding PS3s BEFORE PS3 exploding gets buffed in Dust 1.8.
The HOW of this isn't important, technology is 1s and 0s, and anything can be agreed upon with the right handshake.
What IS important is WHY we need this: improved patches, feedback on changes, feedback on game design choices. |

What IS important is WHY we need this: improved patches, feedback on changes, feedback on game design choices. Arguing that there's no point in doing QA because you can't find every single bug is like saying that mandated security measures in the workplace are useless because accidents will still happen. Sony is guaranteeing that the software running on your console does not render it inoperable. To ensure that they are testing every new build on its basic function and safety before letting it on the PSN. They already sped up this process specifically for CCP and Dust which is the only reason we even have monthly instead of bi-anual patches. The only way i could imagine to get a true SISI client on the PS3 is that downloading/installing/running it simply voids your warranty so you can buy a new console every time something catastrophic happens and, believe me, this can happen.
What exactly does Sony guarantee? Let's take a look at the PSN EULA:
Quote: 19. Limits on our liability and your rights As far as permitted by law, we are not responsible or liable for nor do we give warranty or representation in relation to: ... (vii) Loss of data, loss of or damage to software or hardware or unauthorised access to your SEN account as a result of using or accessing the SEN; and
Oh wow, looks like they guarantee absolutely nothing.
Would you people stop pulling boogeymen out of your butts to prevent this from happening?
A test environment for Dust is a 100% solvable problem, and we need it ASAP. |

Statements like these can be found all over the dev post search.
Yeah, that's to be expected. Everything is hard and complicated until the brass gets everyone in to a room, locks the door, and says: "We're making a test environment before March, what do we need to make it happen."
Then all the excuses fade away, and suddenly the impossible is possible.
The question is do we as a player base demand it? |
