Rail Rifles do the same amount of damage no matter how close to the opponent you are.
I mean, shouldn't they work more like the laser rifle in that they should build up damage the closer they are to their optimal?
Or am I wrong?

Doesn't that go against the lore of the Caldari tech? I know you're thinking logically but if I'm correct, Caldari weapons are good for distance firing. Up close they are weak. Maybe that has something to do with the type of projectile, speed and travel distance. I'm not sure.

Rail technology is still projectile technology. Unlike laser which get more focused at range, the projectile of a rail or projectile weapon loses momentum the farther it travels. The momentum is strongest the closer it is to the target.
If anything should be like the laser rifle it's the scrambler which is in fact laser technology.

No, they are supposed to be like this. The point is that the range is better in order to compensate for the inability to do twitch shooting up close. |

Rail Rifle rounds are kinetic. The damage wouldn't change unless the velocity increased / decreased.
The decrease applies after it has reached it's max effective distance.

I thought I was imagining things. The RR is brutal pretty much at any range. Haven't seen too many CRs on the kill feed, don't even know if I've been hit by one yet. RR= Blue puff of death.

The optimal of the rail rifle (as with everything but the laser rifle) starts from 0. The STD rail rifle has a 62 meter optimal range, so So it will do the same damage from 0 to 62 meters. Once you extend past 62 meters, then the damage starts to drop. Works like this for every weapon except the laser rifle, no reason to expect differently from the RR. Also, railguns don't magically get stronger the more distance they travel, so having them start off weaker and gradually get stronger as they approach a certain distance does not make sense.

working as intended.
You want an equivalant? Forge Gun does the same amount of damage at all ranges in it's optimal. Same tech.

I tried the Rail Rifle on one of my alts yesterday. I skilled it to standard level first, played a couple of matches, then skilled it to level 5 and played a couple of matches again, still using the standard level rifle.
Granted this isn't exactly a large sample, but I actually found it a lot easier to kill players closer than 30 meters than players farther off. And I've been using the semi-auto Scrambler rifle for the past two or three months now, so I'm used to having to aim at distance. Maybe I found the recoil easier to handle with a larger/closer target? I dunno, maybe I just got lucky. |

As others have said, there's no drop off because it's a projectile weapon not a laser. And it fits with Caldari long-range doctrine - it sucks in CQC due to the spool time. I've put about 1mil SP into the RR but will still use AR for close range work. |

So is it possible to fit a commando with a RR and a GEK? If possible, that could be lethal in the right hands. But I don't know anything about the commando stats.

It is at advanced level. If you just want a GEK and standard RR, that is. I don't have reduction to CPU/PG usage on either, so you may be able to slap both a GEK and advanced RR on it if you do.
Personally, I just use Rail Rifle, Scrambler Rifle, Nanohives. All standard on a standard frame. My experience with Commando gives me a huge advantage over a lot of people. My proto Commando is naaaasssssty to deal with.
