It is amazing that the miserable control system that CCP/Shanghai developed is so persistent. It defies all reason. We get super speed HAVs, with accelerators, and they still cannot make a turn as fast as ... well, anything on Earth with a dual tread drive system.
It took over a year before the rotten LAV control system was replaced with something that approached common sense so I now wonder why I expected this fabulous 1.7 vehicle patch to end all patches would make a tank turn better? But I did! And they don't!
The Devs even commented on the miserable handling for a reason to gut vehicles. Turning was mentioned at least once in the several blogs I read. But, HAVs still don't turn.
Hint for ya here DevBoiz: The treads can drive your monster to 24m/s (and get there very quickly) are what turns the HAV. So why does it turn like little tiny robots climb out from under the HAV and pick it up to reposition it? Cause it does and its wrong. |

Balancing factor.
You got speed, lower costs and better weapons.
The least you could have is crap turning. All fun and games till you reach a corner in the road.
Madness is the emergency exit. You can just step outside, and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened.

I would challenge anyone stating that CCP/Shanghai did anything initially as a balance issue. In particular in regards to their goofy vehicles* and their miserable control system.
I admit they work as designed. I also know the Devs were unhappy with them and yet ... here they are. Still lumbering.
A reasonable solution, which won't happen, would be a turning slider as an option. But this ignores the fact that the KB/M solution is better than the DS3. Bad for me as I prefer the controller, in particular when I cannot remap the keys/buttons to something of my choosing. Imagine being disabled. It only aggravates this experience (true on all too many games though).
A better game balance would be a slightly faster turning speed (double what it is under the DS3) with a slower top speed. Even better would be a turning speed that responded to the analog input of the controller! Heresy, I know.
* Flying bricks? Is that all they could come up with? |
