You can make arguments all day about how the HMG underperforms, and I'd back you up. But let's not spread misinformation, people.
The HMG was before, and still remains, the highest DPS infantry weapon in the game (possibly beside the shotgun, but that's hard to calculate).

Honestly, I'm having much better luck with it.
Though I attribute that to the fact that I have a 100% free LAV now to use as a Battle Segway to get my fat ass into knife-fighting range. (Thanks for the free turret on the Guristas Saga, CCP!)

Here's the part where I make myself look like an idiot:
My numbers are for the Rail Rifle, which is why I mentioned the charge time.
Here's the part where it doesn't matter:
The 704 DPS you calculate for the Combat Rifle doesn't account for time between shot bursts or having to manually pull the trigger per burst. The gun doesn't actually do that DPS.
The most direct comparison would be the Assault Combat Rifle, which at proto level does 464 DPS. The basic HMG still does 22.6% more DPS than that.
Anway, +1 for calling me on my sh**. I hate spreading misinformation myself.
