Not really, yet I want to call attention to an unsettling precedent being established with Microsoft's Xbox One and game companies.
[My Xbox One WonGÇÖt Let Me Swear]
I ran across this article today in my feed which illustrates how the Xbox One's Kinect audio sensor is being used by games and client services to curtail obscene language. While I'm on board for monitoring slurs and hate speech, I draw issue with using machines to monitor and enforce rules on what is constituted as 'inappropriate' speech. Is this a limitation of one's ability to express themselves or simply a way to establish safe (and arguably sterile) environments for play. One could draw a similarity to the Dust 514 forums themselves. This forum space implements a profanity filter and moderation from Game Masters to monitor and enforce various guidelines. And I agree that their presence has helped make this space a more welcoming and enjoyable place to share ideas without getting bogged down in flame battles.
Besides focusing on the 'social ethics' of behavioral modification, it's easier to make a case on the technical can of worms that comes with monitoring spoken work.
Censoring text is a far more cut and dry processes with automated character readers and some minor human oversight to pick out people who to try to fool systems. Spoken word on the other hand, is fluid and tremendously difficult even for multi-million dollar speech recognition systems to capture. That certainly includes the Xbox One Kinect, while a highly advanced system, is far from perfect in accurately decoding human speech as many product reviews have shown. But when it does work I worry about the ease of a roommate or nephew walking through during a game session to blurt out '****' as they pass by. It's a system that currently seems far too open for grief and headache.
What are your thoughts on this?

One more reason why I don't want to buy the Xbox One.

I can imagine their reaction to Eve Online and Dust 514 players talking about burning an economy and using corporate espionage while also smuggling contraband and holding players for ransom in low-sec space.

A part of me feels like the NSA would be all over EVE Online...but I think they tapped into that after the death of Sean Smith in the Benghazi U.S. Consulate attack.

I understand the need for a reputation system. Sure you could say "It's my game. I'll do what I please and say what I want." But if it involves interaction with other players than you don't really have an excuse for saying what you want to. Its there by in multiplayer everyones game. And if you take our the joy of game from someone or offend them than I think its a great idea to mark them down as "Avoid me"

I get the feeling the NSA and CIA might be using Eve Online as a recruiting tool since apparently Eve players, especially those in Goonswarm Federation, happen to be far better at being spies than even their own agencies.

A problem comes in when this speech monitoring is cropping up in Skype. Some users have filed petitions to Microsoft about their online services being revoked due to private Skype conversations featuring 'colorful' language.

Oh please, they already know you're a nobody so don't flatter yourself. I agree you should be able to cuss/say what you please but don't act like they're monitoring your every move because they're afraid you're a super spy. |

I had not heard about this but it honestly doesn't surprise me.
What with the NSA spying not only on their own poor citizens but on foreign citizens also.
I understand some people on the internet can be very abusive and thats wrong, however we are meant to have freedom of speech.
Hey NSA / Spy computer network - WE HUMANS WILL NEVER BOW DOWN TO YOUR NANNY STATE BIG BROTHER SYSTEM!
The day will come when you push people too far and retribution will be at hand! |
