Many FPS games have this by default. You launch your first copy Metal Gear Solid and often times the first thing you do is run virtual simulators to understand the moves and controls. America's Army (remember this one?) forced new players to go through a boot camp system where they went through training exercises in mock cities with cardboard silhouettes for targets before they were given a chance to go into actual combat against other players.
Which brings me to my two main points here:
1. We need a AA-style boot camp system where new players have to go through a mock city to pass but not necessarily against other players yet. 2. We need a shooting range to practice our techniques and strategies privately. CCP said when they release the current meager tutorial that they didn't need to teach fps players how to run or shoot a gun, etc. Or something very much to that effect and vaguely condescending.
It pains me to have to explain this, however......
CCP: The point is to allow players to familiarize themselves with the look/sound/feel/effects of weapons in a safe learning environment where they can take all the time they want to play and experiment, so that the complex and bewildering DUST battlefield is a more comprehensible and new mercs can use that hands-on to more intelligently asses battlefield threats and opportunities.
For example, after a couple of minutes messing around with a mass driver and some clustered test targets, a merc would understand that taking cover behind stacked crates is a death sentence when facing a masshole. Another example would be hands-on deploying and using every piece of equipment in the game, again in a test environment. Another is recognizing the beam/sound of a scrambler or laser and knowing what it will do to one's shields and at what range. This can't be forced on a new player, but we must provide the opportunity for peeps so inclined to self-teach before feeding them to the proto-blending anti-NPE machine.
I understand CCP's use of their current objective-based tutorial and agree that for some aspects of new player education it works well. It is not a suitable teaching method for all topics and skills, however. The NPE will be under-servicing the playerbase, DUST and New Eden until there is some progress made on giving new peeps what they need to thrive in our beautiful, heartless universe.
I support SP rollover.
