DUST is the first FPS game i have tried to play and having issues getting the hang of it. I am not new to gaming, GT- GT5 and Motor Storm are my standards. I prefer the Sniper and long range weapons due not having the dexterity in my right hand for up close fast action moving. I would like suggestions on upgrades that are suited for this role. I have noticed on You Tube videos that opponents are visible on the mini map and on the playing field, but I do not see them while playing. I have been as close as 60m to as far as 432m when hit, dead in 1 shot. I have hit opposition 3 times at 125m with no signs of slowing him down, what am I missing? I have about 20 hours of trying to survive with one kill and an assist.

The markers on the mini map are the scanner in your suit tracking people, also if an ally has them scanned you can see them.
As for having issues killing people it is probably they have a higher level suit, most of the suits look very similar so that may be it. Also if you are using a Sniper at close range you are at a bit of disadvantage. Also depends on the weapon your opponent is using etc.

Using a sniper in this game is a lot different than using one from a game like CoD or Battlefield. I'm guessing you're using militia gear too which is basically a glass cannon minus the cannon. Pro tips, stay at least 100m away from anything because of how far ARs and SCRs can spray. |

With the DUST Sniper Rifle, you need to trail a little bit behind the enemy, just so you know. Maybe a fraction of a centimeter behind his back?

One tip: when you are sniping, look at the bottom of your screen when over the enemy. There is an efficiency percent (I think its labeled efficiency...). Whatever the bottom label is. Anything over 100% is a headshot. That should increase your odds. Otherwise, body shots are hard to make kills with unless you're finishing off a guy already cornered.

It is all the basic starter stuff that I have, need a good flak jacket. Never played any other FPS so sorry to say the CoD and Bat are lost on me. A good list of what I need to get would be nice, I continue playing as a target till I earn the credits to upgrade. As for joining a squad is out until I can be more than a ginny pig to get them in the open and reloading. The Rail Gun and Cannons are fun to give cover fire until I am taken out. I have sniper training in the early 90"s, M40A1 @ 750m and the M82 @1250m so I know the drill.

I would like to form a squad with you in game, it would be much easier for me to give you the run down via coms in game. I have around 5 million skill points into sniper related things and I'm a decent shot. What times would you be available, and would you be able to join the Learning Coalition chat? |

you could try different types of sniper rifles. I find that if you can't kill them with a standard variant, maybe a tactical variant is the way to go. You're trading clip size for lower bullets, but I think it more than makes up for that with improved rate-of-fire.
Also, as far as the game is going right now, seems like snipers are more efficient at counter-sniping or providing suppressive fire for other clones already in fire fights. Sure, you might get more assists than kills this way but it feels good knowing that you were the difference between a team member dying or living another round.
My sniper fit (although not great by any stretch of the imagination): Standard Caldari Assault, nanohives, Tactical sniper rifle, complex light damage modifiers x2. I think it's about 15,000 isk. |

I'd advise joining dust university, they will teach you a lot.
You could join my corp, we are very laid back and generally between the ages 24-35, I'd give you all the advice you'd need and very patiently with a respect to how you play.
Gear and equipment is almost as important as gun game in dust and my swamp marines prove that by now being able to go head to head with people who mopped the floor with them 4 months ago, they had the skill but not the gear.

As a sniper you really want a suit with 3 high slots (left side) and 4 low slots (right side) and put complex damage mods in the highs and armour plates in the lows, get a charge sniper as well.
I'd suggest amarr logistics or Gallente logistics, see suit info for more.
If you enjoy close support sniping then I'd get a tactical sniper for its increased ROF OR the tactical gallente ar variant, always keep the 3 damage mods when sniping.
For equipment get hives, drop uplinks and whatever else you want, if you are close support sniping get uplinks, scanner and hives.

My only tip for low SP snipers is, unlock a basic light suit and fit a militia profile dampener. If you go with Minmatar you'll also have decent speed to relocate once the enemy starts zeroing in on your location. If you're going to primarily snipe, invisibility is your first best ally.
Not new, just new to you.

As a third option, there's the Learning Coalition (Ironyimation, the first guy to respond, is from the LC).
No commitment and no limits. There's not really classes, its more like you ask a question and we answer it. If you're not looking to join the LC officially, that's completely fine, but you might as well have the chat channel on your list, as an emergency help line type of thing.
List of top instructors: -Fox Gaden, former director and instructor at D-Uni, Co-Founder of the LC -Artificer Ghost, CEO and Director of Education at Bojo's School of The Trades, Co-Founder of the LC -Charlotte O'Dell, forum troll, but absolutely knows what he's talking about when it comes to tanking (Taught some of the best tankers), Co-Founder.
We also have a couple EVE guys in our channel, in case you need EVE Support for FW (The Learning Coalition is leaned towards the Gallente side, so it's mostly Gallente FW help, maybe a Minmatar or 2).
I'm on for a very large part of the day, and almost all morning. During noon, a ton of other students/instructors are online, and at night we have some of the more laid-back people, like Jillic or Irony, Charlotte, etc.
So yup. Join the channel, chat with us, squad up with some people, and then kill stuff.

I'm in a similar boat, although I've played single-player FPSs some.
Couple-a tips.
Until you get up to Charged Sniper Rifle, you're not going to be able to one-shot much, unless either a) you're shooting a low-level scout b) you get a headshot
So, lesson 1, if you really want to stick with sniper, is to save ALL your SP and put them into sniper weapon skill.
lesson 2: damage mods, as other folks said. I guesss...
lesson 3: if you're wiling to go for the stationary targets a lot, using the TAC, and specifically trying for TWO shots, is the way to go for you. you can quickly squeeze out 2 shots in .5 seconds, by letting go the stick and just spamming the trigger, once you're on target. Most people cant react that fast, so you will most likely land both shots on a stationary target. if you can land both shots on the HEAD.. then you're really golden, unless they're either a heavy, or a proto suit. 177* 1.75 * 2 = 619 damage.
and PS: Don't bother with the Ishukone. Waste of money. Keep going for eitiher the Charged, or the Kaalaioka |

I have basic quit G T 5, bought G T 6 and it pissed me off, waisted $65. Having a blast with DUST and sniping. I am working on the Sniping Skills, did get basics in most areas. Love the headshot FX, and have put 3 into 1 before they could move, had the same to me also. Earning bill to $100 a fight it will take time for the top levels. Best was 4K,5A with 3HS at 380m, $700. Three of us took out 40 and sat around out of ammo and leaving some for the others to play with. Can not wait to get the upgrades to get a 1 shot kill that is not a HS, very envious sitting between them today.

for a sniper, it is a slow grind. We are similar, I am 52, Army Vet, hands are trashed as well, not good in close quarters FPS. level up to the charge sniper. world opens up from there. Damage mods, boost the kill possibility. Dampening. Stay hidden, undetected. Uplinks. you need to spam a little for your WP. Nanohive, bring some ammo. Cardos, run forest run!
