Great, so you tested many options out and you came to the conclusion that its a mix of voice chat and equipment spam in the large sockets that is cause LAG and making LOW Framerates?
That's interesting.
If it is a memory issue, then could CCP just make equipment a NON physical item? Just make it into a 2d icon or something if it means it will help?
As for the voice chat - that will need optimisations that unfortunately we cant really help too much with. That's down to CCP and the people who provide the voice chat service. |

remember this dev. blog?? here's an interesting piece of the blog, and here's the link to the blog. what was posted about equipment spam in the "city" makes sense considering what this says...
"The socket
A GÇ¥socketGÇ¥ is the container for a group of game contents. The same socket on the battlefield can be loaded with different content, which provides variations of battlefields when players play on the same terrain.
In DUST 514, there are three different sizes of socket, which can be used as outposts, spawn bases, or objectives. Due to memory, budget, and performance issues, the number of sockets are limited, so their positions need to be carefully planned. For instance, outpost sockets always take up large amounts of memory, so they are typically placed in the center of the battlefield, whereas small and medium-sized sockets are more flexible. Due to these constraints, we always try to make sockets appear in the places they are most needed. "

That's why I always supported a PS4 port. But we all should understand that player base is here on ps3 and there are not much ps4 owners, plus, they'd need to rework (better this time ;) ) the entire game. I'm pretty sure they can do it on ps3, and then start working on much larger projects on ps4.

Good job trying to nail down the problem guys.
I think you've pretty much got it: a combination of voice chat, server latency, equipment spam, and poorly optimized sockets.
The framerate lag in large sockets is already pretty apparent even in pub matches. Thing is, it's not nearly as noticeable as it is in PC matches because you don't have compounding factors like everyone on voice coms and rampant equipment spam making it worse.
Several things need to be done on CCP's end to alleviate the issues:
(a) All the large sockets, particularly Orbital Artillery and Research Facility, need to be optimized to function better. I know you guys are trying to stay within "technical limitations" or what not, but the lag in large sockets has always been apparent in varying degrees of severity.
(b) The visual/sound effects from equipment need to be optimized as well. En masse they present some pretty big issues regarding performance. I can literally reproduce this myself with just a supply depot. Switch between fits and spam all my equipment in a concentrated area and the game turns into a slide show.
(c) The spam of equipment needs to be looked at from a gameplay perspective. It's pretty ridiculous that one individual can single-handedly drop in the range of 15-20 uplinks as well as nanohives just by switching between fits and using different equipment. There needs to be some sort of hard cap on a player's ability to drop certain types of equipment. Equipment holds no tactical value anymore because you can literally just spam it anywhere and everywhere without any sort of drawback.
Let me play you the song of my people!

i'm all for the port, but we need to be realistic here. it's pretty obvious that it is not going to come until at least 2015 (maybe even 2016). by then, the ps3 version will be complete (mostly), and it would make more sense to move it to the ps4. i know about the ram difference. not much can be done about this with the ps3. ccp needs to work within the ps3's capabilities, and/or we need to be understanding of those limitations. that INCLUDES those who purposefully do things to cause these lag spikes. after all, it's a game. it is meant to be fun.
personally, i'd rather have a good looking game that functions than a beautiful game that doesn't. that is one of the reasons why M.A.G. was only available in 720p and the graphics were not up to "COD" standards. Zipper sacrificed looks for function, and with 256 people on the field, it worked pretty good. even that had plenty of lag at times... hence the nickname "L.A.G.". i've never played COD or BF, but i could imagine lag exists in those as well. Hell, lag existed in Resident Evil 5 and some other games i've played online (wipeout HD) as well.
of course the ps4 will be great. i'd love to see 32 vs 32 and even MAG's 128 vs 128. i'm sure we will see this on the ps4. unfortunately, we just have to wait. i personally will not be buying a ps4 until dust comes to it. no need too. dust is the only game i play for the most part.

$hit, we will be lucky to see all racial suits by this date.
Great stuff OP, I just hope that instead of chasing trolls around that some MOD or Dev does something like pass this on to someone who can fix stuff.
Meh, I think this thread will never see a blue tag in it. Maybe in 6-10 months they will use it in an update thread saying they are aware of the issues and are still trying to figure it out.
But hey buy a booster.

Yes! Thank you so much for letting us do this!
By the way: is there a way to put together 16 US guys from your side to test more? I'd like to test the same things in a 16 vs 16. Some say that Equipment spam does not affect directly your team but the other one and I have a theory I'd like to test.

There is countless videos that show these things.
The biggest thing that gets me is the test they did. They can literally host a match and see it for themselves, monitoring everything. In the very least, they could say what appeared to cause the most latency.

Sure yes, but it's so obvious: equipment spam and large sockets cause framerate issues. This is the first step. The second step is fixing lag or at least "balance" continent vs continent matches. For now, it will always advantage one side over the other one, and we all know that if you want a real competition you just can't accept one side to be at 20 ms latency while the other one is at 200 ms .

Hey guys,
Thanks a lot for pulling this together and really sorry about the late reply. Love getting this kind of feedback and I've passed it on to our Programmers / QA. We're aware of the problem and working on a fix this - not sure what the latest is but we're aware of it and want to get this fixed.
Again thanks and sorry for the delay in responding! :)
Edit: We did pass on this information over the holidays actually - just didn't reply to this thread. My bad!
