I've been lurking on these forums for a while, but I'm going to pop my for cherry to reply to this.
This is my first character in Dust, and I started the same day as 1.4 dropped. I would class myself as a casual player who occasionally have all day sessions when time permits. Off the top of my head, I have about 2.8million SP and 34K WP iirc. My K/D sucks, but as I play as a Logibro, that's understandable (no, I don't play as a Killer Bee).
Recently I've been moving between Public and Factional for a number of reasons. If I see a known Protostomping Corp in Public, I'll move to Factional Warfare and vice-versa. (Let's face it, we all know who I'm talking about, no need to name names).
So what are my options if there is a limit to joining FW? Join a Public match and get redlined/redline the other team for 10 minutes until on the game ends? Its boring as hell, and does not help new player retention.
Like most new players I joined this game with a handfull of friends, and I'm the only one left playing. Thereason the other players left? Pubstomp after pubstomp after pubstomp. When you've got characters fresh out of BA going up against Protobears in your first match, what's the point of playing? The very first game out of BA, we went up against a Corp who brought out 3 tanks, 2 dropships and 3-4 LAV's. Two of the three players I brought into the game left after one match. The other left after about a week because IT'S NOT FUN to know that your going up against a team you literally cannot harm.
I've seen a lot of theories on the forums on how to fix matchmaking, and they all have pros and con's, but without a higher number of people playing, I don't think any of them will work, unfortunately.
While I can understand the vets wanting to ensure the FW means something in the link between Dust and Eve (and I totally agree with this-thats the whole point of this, isn't it? To get that link between the two different games in the same universe), limiting the already small amount of game modes for new players/casual players isn't really going to help grow the game. With only a small player base, we need to make sure that new players stick with the game.
Yes, this is New Eden, and yes , HTFU, but do you really think that giving new players one game mode only is going to help new player retention?

Your points are valid, but you still have 3 game mode, basically FW is a skirmish and you have much more probability to be stomped by stacked squads in FW than in a public contract. The absence of PVE is another key factor, we should have a PVE coop, to take a break. A entrance barrier is needed, because if till now FW has been a good place to escape and have some relaxed match (sometime), from 1.7 it will not be anymore.
I agree that PVE is desperately needed in-game asap. If there is a limit to joining FW, and the only other option is to join a protostomp in Pub games, then what's my motivation to play? In my time zone, the ONLY way to avoid getting pubstompt is to join FW, or log into a game, see who's on the other side, check my internal 'sh!t list' and then decide if I want to join.
Agreed that there is 3 game modes in Public games; however as a newish player, there is no point doing Ambush as I'm going to get killed the second I spawn. At least give me a fighting chance! As for Domination, that's just a uplink/made fest and is usually over in the first 5 mins.
I've also found just recently that FW has more even matches than Pub games. I was even in a game yesterday where both sides had no known corps and it was one of the best games I've had since I started! No proto gear and the game had many ebbs and flows. We won in the end by about 10 clones. I wish all the games I played were like that. I don't know if this was due to the players on at the time, but by 4pm GMT I don't normally play because the Protostomping teams usually start playing and stroke their e-peen by stomping newbs., and the hassle of finding a game without them just isn't worth it.
Oh yeah, I tend to write long posts. I get forum diarrhea from time to time :) |
