So i'll start off by saying that I do my fair share of BA ISK Farming. I would go in with some uplinks and play toy soldiers, see if I could get those wet behind the ears Mercs to actually do something useful. It was fun, and I won't lie, I gunned down more than my fair share of hapless noobs, but more often than not I like to work with the uplinks/CRUs, try and control the flow of battle, and I always run solo.
Anyway, I've gone into some BA matches lately (ISK is a bit tight at the moment) and i'm a little appalled at whats going on. Dropships flying around, placing Logis on roofs who in turn litter the tops of buildings with uplinks. Tanks rolling through the streets absolutely crushing masses of ignorant noobs. Advanced squad tactics that immediately result in one side getting completely and irreversibly red lined. I would say at this point at least 30-50% of BA matches have at least 1 full squad of vets on a team.
Take this as QQing if you want, but this is posing a serious problem to the health of the game. These new players are getting absolutely crushed right out of the gate. I'm talking just plain out bent over a table and ****** in the ass. Add to this the fact I've seen it take upwards of 4 minutes at times to find a BA match over the past few days.
People say increase required WP for BA Graduation. I say bull pucky. Well, not completely. The way I see it there is 2 options.
Option 1- Eliminate BA completely. Introduce a MAG-esq tutorial mission, have the new player do a little bit of everything (maybe like fire an AR, SCR, Shotgun, Forge, ect ect, hack some CRUs/Depots, call in a vehicle). Maybe have some super short videos of each individual class, giving the new player some sort of knowledge base to make decisions.
Then either outright give the noob say, I don't know, 2-3mil SP, or give this 2-3mil SP out the way they currently give out equipment in BA (250k SP for making a suit, 500K SP for fighting in your first battle, ect ect). Have them jump right into the game.
Option 2- Keep the BA, but make all ISK non-transferable. When the new player reaches BA Graduation, they are prompted to spend their ISK on equipment, and unspent ISK is removed from the player upon graduation.
Just a thought, people may not agree. But in my eyes BA is broken, and for the health of the game, the problems need to be addressed.

To be honest I haven't thought out the details too much.
Basically Option 1 takes the current BA out completely. The game MAG (which was similar in some respects to Dust) had you complete what was basically an obstacle course when you first made a new character. You would run, jump, crouch, all the general navigation stuff. Then you would shoot, throw a nade, and I think mark a target or something. In total it took like 5 minutes or something, and after that you were off to fight regular battles.
I think this would be better for new players. The BA is currently as brutal if not more so than regular battles for new players. Just get them out there in the real stuff, there is no point in holding them back with the BA in the state it is currently in.
As for the SP part, since they won't have the supposedly "safer" BA to "practice" in, i'd say find a way to give them an agreeable amount of SP fairly quickly. The current BA system gives new players equipment (such as low grade dropsuits, armor plates, ect ect) when they complete objectives such as joining and fighting their first battle, or making their first suit. I say instead give them SP for completing these things. I said around 2-3mil at the most but that's just off the top of my head.
Option 2 as I said would leave the BA in place, but making ISK nontransferable between regular players and those in the BA might deter vets from Babypunching. Making sure no ISK ever leaves the BA by forcing new characters to spend it or lose it upon BA Graduation I think would help. It would also make extending the BA time more feasible.
Again, this is all just brainstorming. I think another thing that may help is a new gamemode (which many have been calling for). I think an all militia mode would be cool, even though passives will still have a massive impact. Make this mode pay out decent and people will gravitate towards it, and maybe the BA can return to normal for the players it is suppose to be for. |

Roofer Madness wrote:So basically what you're saying is that the problem with BA is people like you going there and beating up on noobs. Then just STOP. It's pathetic. You can ISK farm in pub matches in the MCC like everyone else.
Yea, I go in there from time to time. But not with a squad. And I don't send money to my new char to deck it out with the best equipment I can get.
I guess I should have just not said anything and we could all keep pretending like it doesn't happen?
However you want to view me, this is still going on, whether I stop or not. If CCP wants to improve player retention, I feel this is a good place to start.

But you got 5 minutes to waste on something you don't care about Elmo? That's the kind of attitude that kept you from learning to read in the first place.

[quote=Roofer Madness I'm just pointing out that I think it is funny that you are part of the problem stated in your OP[/quote]
I've yet to wrangle 5 other Corp members to squad up in BA, and other than the starter LAV I drop no vehicles. I stick to the shadows and play the uplink game. But I guess this is the same as squad tactics and vehicle domination.
The things you are worried about are the equivalent of what is going down in BA. Except Pubs, FW, and PC are where you are suppose to use Proto. BA should be for new players, not seasoned vets squading up and sending ISK to their new alts to dominate the helpless.
I personally think its funny you could give a damn about what goes down in BA, but you, a vet, wants to cry because there is too much Proto in normal game modes. |
