Pubs are filled with 80% solo players. The only break these guys take from queuing solo into battles is to come on the forums to complain about proto stomping.
The mechanics of Dust certainly point toward team play with the pinnacle of Dust 514 being Planetary Conquest. Team play is so poor that at this time there are perhaps less than 10 corporations that can field a competitive PC team. What can be done to change this?
Lets look at some of the problems:
1) There is currently no way for a corporation to practice as a team (this is such a glaring problem it makes my head hurt). 2)
Well I can't come up with any more because #1 is so freakin obvious. AND on top of this from everything that's been posted they are leaving team deploy out of FW.
Remove time in battle from ISK payout formula and provide a bonus to winning team... Watch battles become fun again.

I still don't know why they disabled the auto-squadding. It worked pretty well.
Oh wait... i remember. People started complaining that because some people didn't use mics they didn't have a place in their squad so they wanted them out. So CCP changed it and made anyone not in a pre-made squad spawn squadless. There were only very small benefits from this, as i expected back then, while the drawbacks are at times very evident.

Yeah. Having a practice mode against people you know would be awesome. A corp training their newer members by fighting each other? Yes, please.
The closest thing we can get to this at the moment is probably 4 squads Q - synchronizing into opposite factional teams and fighting against each other with a few randoms. |

The problem with FW qsyncing is that it's usually against 16 randoms and sometimes a squad. It ends quickly.
It isn't training.

CCP just needs to make "q-syncing" available to everyone. Once this is possible, then everyone will do it and then matches will be "fair" again.

Warbarge opportunities to squad up removed in favor of herding players more quickly into horribly balanced matches. Enormous urge to sprint to their deaths somehow overcomes the desire to wait 20 seconds while team window populates players/squads.
Squad finder being used for recruiting, trolling, afk-ing instead of finding squads. 9/10 pub squads I join are in the process of doing one of three things: 1. Begging for contributions to buy more tanks our dropships 2. Complaining that leader is afk then leaving and being immediately replaced by another blueberry. repeat. 3. Asking ad nauseam for members to submit an application
Good squads led by recognizable players/corps typically fill within 5 seconds. LFS in most public channels gets you chided for not using squad finder.
Teams help win matches, but winning matches means more risk of losing suits and kdr has intrinsic, social value whereas winning matches offers little reward.

That sounds good in theory, but there are a LOT of people that like to go solo.
It has to be a separate gamemode.

You hit on a lot of the real issues there. Perhaps this game will never be what we wanted it to be because of this.
I've been calling for incentives to get people willing to fight in pubs (higher payouts for WP and winning), but perhaps COD has ruined any hope for a "smart shooter".

I got BF4 for 360 to take me away from Dust for a bit. I still log in to get my bonus, and I'll still play it. But I need a break.

Heres my vision on how team play could be increased.
Gamemode design: Creating gamemodes which require more than just "hacking" or killing. As an Idea, a revamp on domination that requires your team to be interacting with 2 points at the same time,( both the be fought for, and defended) in order to be able to hack the main null cannon. this means actuall team interaction, and planning, rather than just run in spam uplinks and ignore the blueberries.
The 1st screen you see when entering the battle. Maybe have team/squads loaded on there so you can join a squad whilst waiting to deploy on the initial 10 second spawn in.
Squad and team bonus', when operating with X amount of your team and an objective, wether defending or breaching, extra points, per person in pack added to WP gains. In otherwords, just being there and helping your team will benefit everyone elsewho is trying also.
Roles, in battle someone other than a logi needs to be a team player.
simple thing like how intel is gathered could open this game right up. A sniper should be a ble to "tag" a target, or a location that alerts his squad/team to a threat, or an incomming force. They have the best or should have the best view of the field and this needs to be a matchwinning strategy. Rather than countering snipers cuz they are annoying your team, they should be threats due to their ability to track your teams movements. A scout should be outfield intel, infiltrating enemy lines to be able to relay precise enemy locations and movement. IMO scanners should have been a scout only item. less range, but more of a threat. When you see "you have been scanned" it should not be due to the fact a logi is spinning in circles in the corner of a room near his squad. It should be the work of someone who has worked on being fast and unseen. A commando Should be scout like, but with more fire power when his attack hits. He should be able to hide, flank and breach with a nasty outcome, making his role critical in battle, if timed correct, he should be able to send an enemy advance into chaos, distrupting their force, alowing his front line assault, a better chance to stand their ground. Assault Should be strong in numbers, setting a strong perimeter for their heavy friends to operate from within. Heavy Point defense, whether anti infantry or anti vehicle, should be able to stand their ground, holding the close range battles as theirs. They should also be able to breach, using the assault to clear a line, so they can get in close and eliminate.
I would also like to see a counter-intelligance role added, a class specifically for, distrupting enemy comms(mics), radar and scan attempts, maybe even the ability to get the enemies electronics to act up, displaying wrong radar info, sabotaging equipment, to either hurt the enemy or benefit his team. The ability to hack an uplink so it kills enemies spawning in, or turns blue for use by his team.
As of right now, the game has turned into a standard shooter, not much variation, not much point behind a role, not much reason to play other than to brainlessly shoot. not much reason to play for your team.

I think you are on to something, but I'm not sure how much of this is needed in pubs. I think that you should be able to coast through pubs. The problem is that there is only pubs and PC.
PC is too expensive for corps to jump into. We have to have corp contracts again. And I think further expansions into FW should have higher tier battles that are team deployable.
It takes a LOT of work to get good at PC. There are probably less than a dozen good Field Commanders in Dust right now and that won't change until there is more teams fighting teams.

Adding new roles, or adding purpose to roles would also include WP bouns'. A newer player might not be able to stand up aswell in gunfights, but given the chance to either earn points from just trying to do a job for his team may help. If they knew that just operating around his team, or an objective would benefit his SP/ISK/WP gain aswell as the teams may be a good way to get them into the game. Chosing rather than hold down an objective with only 500ehp, he could be relaying intel to his team, or he could be sabotaging the enemies advance in his own little world. You have to feel for some of these blooooberries, not only getting a match loss, but only getting 50wp when he get to the leaderboards, because his ADV fit, with basic shields, basic AR was no match for mr 900ehp gallente logi, stood in a nest of triage hives, non stop scans, with a duvolle and core locus nades for those who do try him. Creating a war point reward system that had solo rewards, aswell as squad rewards might also help. say 1000WP gets you an ammo drop, your team would be happy to see it, you get WP for their use of it. Or maybe you could earn a solo artillery strike at X amount of points.
I also think that there needs to be a squad and a team limit on equipment, disrupting the spam, and giving people a chance to get that uplink down that matters. rather than be the guy who spams 20 uplinks, 20 nano hives, then switching to assaultlogi. Equipment distibution should be a non stop job. Maybe timers on uplinks, giving your team small windows to use one when its there.
The game currently scares new players into not trying, all they see is death, minimal WP then named and shamed at the end of the match for not having 20+ million SP. All the time I join matches where the other side has protostomped the enemy into the redline, mass spammed the map with uplinks to an almost ireversable point. This removes all want to try for your team, this creates a protect my KDR and get what I can from this point mentality, I imagine it also stops newer players from sticking to dust514, when other games offer a much faster and less embaressing game for them to play.
TL:DR... The game needs to allow players whether solo or squaded to feel like they can still help the battle. And needs to reward efforts.

I'm going to tell you the truth, legit from my perspective.
Team play is boosted through getting to know people and building rapport with them. With everyone on the forum constantly QQ nerf this, nerf that, battle logi boo hoo blah blah blah Dust sucks, yadda yadda yadda.
Plus IN the game where everyone throws around racial terms, calls you "gay" or a "***" or something like that....who the **** wants to hang out and be a team player with that?
So this dude "Destructive Habits" in Amarr local chat constantly calls people "***" and "gay" and says you suck "anus powder bombs" and has his little friend who messages you 10 messages all in caps lock screaming about how he rapes your mom or uploads terd sandwiches into your playstation and all kinds of stuff.
So when I see him in raspberry red....I slaughter his ass. I hunt that wascally waspberry wabbit down like there's a 1 million isk bounty on his head.
When I see him in blueberry blue and some raspberries roll up on him...I just sit and watch. Save him? Help his KDR? Help his fitting costs? Nah.
But of course after they slaughter him.....I slaughter them. You know...so we're not mismatched on clones and what not.
So no teamwork is the fault of the users who constantly cuss, spew hatred and racial slurs and all of that ****.
At "The Neutral Zone" we all have excellent teamwork and play together often. We all get along, we're all laid back and the only one who threw out racial and bigoted remarks, got done in by 'ol Michael Epic.

I prefer playing solo in pubs, because i don't like all the hassel that comes with it. 1: the shouting and screaming in my ear, the loud music, etc. 2. turrets beeing fired every sec when in my tank or dropship ( have a nice solution for that, i like to call it my rollercoaster) 3. playing with a lav picked a squad mate up went to go and hack something, turn around lav gone. 4. etc. Its stuff like that, that makes me say to much hassel. offcourse you get the occasional good squads, from other corps. But then again you don't really know each other or each other's playstyle, etc. So that does not always work either. Since in a good squad, you need the communication and knowing eachother's way of playing. The way i see it is pubs is Me time, the rest team/corp play. |

Fin.
Well that goes back to finding the right corp.

But then again you don't really know each other or each other's playstyle, etc. So that does not always work either. Since in a good squad, you need the communication and knowing eachother's way of playing. The way i see it is pubs is Me time, the rest team/corp play.
I agree with you. We need a game mode with team deploy, like corp contracts or corp battles.
So someone could do 10 corp battles a day if they wanted to.

We need a better Comms system with a hierarchical structure.
Squads need to be able to have open chat, but squad leads also need to be able to PTT either with a commander or terrestial officer. This would increase current squads making them more effective.
We need more team based objectives
Assault Rifles need to stop being overpowered
Scanners need to stop being spammed to oblivion and beyond
We need more gamemodes
We need more vehicles
We need more maps
We need crusader suits
We need pilot suits
We need harder to obtain orbitals
We need more squad based equipment

The gun is mightier than both

Instead of push to talk/on & voice enabled/off as default mic settings. Make push to talk/off & voice enabled/on. It would be better for communicating.
Frustrating typing all that junk so a new berry can mic up. Most don't even know!
Communications the key.
