For now I left my PS3 ON at menu screen but it's not doing any sudden shutdowns, but whenever I get on Dust my PS3 unexpectedly turns off. Could Dust 514 really be what was killing my PS3?

Same was happening to my PS3, DUST would cause my PS3 to force shutdown.
Played GTA for a while, no shutdown.
Same thing with Dark Souls.
And the same again with Dragons' Dogma
Then, I try play DUST, and 15mins after logging in, it forces my PS3 to shutdown.
There wasn't even any equipment spam, and I was fighting players from my own region.

Yes, it gives me exactly that. It blinks red until I hit the button, then it goes back to normal.
My PS3 isn't even hot to touch when it happens.

STOP RIGHT NOW.
This is EXACTLY what happened to my PS3 before it gave me the yellow light of death.
1. Get it out into open air if it's inside of a small area. 2. Find a good tutorial of how to clean out your PS3 fans and such. 3. If your PS3's fan sounds like it's dying, turn off the PS3. 4. If you get the red lights again, let the PS3 cool off for at least an hour before you resume again (my mistake).
For me, I kept it running for a few hours with the fan sounding like it's going crazy and it died on me like how you're saying. Eventually it wouldn't turn back on, and then it yellow lighted.
And yes, same type of PS3, same game.

Alldin, did you not just have your PS3 fixed?
If so, its not our PS3s, clearly its something wrong with DUST thats causing this.

Sony built some of the earlier gen PS3s with a substantial amount of space between the heat sink and the CPU. After a significant amount of use, the thermal compound dries out, and the CPU burns the chipset inside the PS3.
Gotta replace the thermal compound or the PS3 will keep overheating until it dies.
Common sense will prevail. Adapt or die.

I also have a fat 40 gig ps3 it seems as long as its 60 degrees in my house and it has good good airflow the fan won't come on meaning its not overheating. Occasionally the fan will come on during a matchbut as soon I'm in merc quarters the fan goes off. As long as its cool good air flow ur good. Well at least for me

This happened to my phatty PS3 when uprising dropped. Eventually, the machien went DOA for any game. I tried to work with CCP Dust Devs, and a Dev even popped into our thread to ask Qs.
In true CCP fashion, never heard form them, and could never get an update to their response. Honestly, it's a combo of #shittycoding coupled with an aging machine. I had been hoping to hold out for the PS$, but just bought a used slim PS3 and have been fine since.
Sorry man. It happened to a group of us and I think that is pretty much how it played out for all affected. I wish it happened nowish tho because I'd just have waited for a PS4 at this point. At least you are kind of lucky in that regard.
I did find web sites at the time that instruct you to resolder the probable affected areas, but F that. I ain't got time for that shizz. At any rate, best of luck!

I recommend taking it to a service center and have them check for you. There are tutorials online to replace the compound, and to assess the health of the PS3, but I don't recommend doing it yourself unless it is a last option.
It isn't unreasonable to think that Dust was built for a later gen PS3, and the timing caught the dying systems in an inopportune time.

When my fat broke I took it to a shop here in Dallas that fixes them.
He said that the solder that they use in game consoles isn't lead based because it's considered a toy. He said that is a big problem.
Makes sense, but who knows?
