I run with only an SMG and I do okay. The M209 and Ishukune Assault are beastly. Beastly and cheap. Cheap to buy and fit. This is a magnificent combo by the way.
Do I get mega-kills? No. Am I trying? No.
Sidearms are really good at protecting yourself...the SMG and Pistol anyway; don't use flaylocks so I can't speak for 'em. They can also be used, in my experience, to help drop enemies that your teammates (that you should be by) are engaging with. The few times i've actually went out with the intent to just kill stuff they work really well so long as your in their range.
They aren't Scrambler Rifles or Duvolles, but they don't shoot cotton candy either.
So long as your not an idiot and go charging off by yourself and try to take on the world head-on, your fine. Amarr Assaults are supposed to be the exception, I think, but I still expect them to have some kind of logi-equipment for use on their teammates.
I snuck my way into a squad of SVER dudes two days ago and played one match (like I do with every game since those WPs will be wasted if i'm not in a squad + frago bonus points) and we won. Before the next game, I was noticed. I wrote my "I've been found out!" and was going to call it a good game and vamoose, but someone voiced up and was alright with me being there because I was repping folks. Stayed for a while and it was actually the first time i've capped out in this game since...way back in closed beta. Feels good to do well enough with helping out your team to actually be of use.
Sometimes i'll go 20-3, sometimes i'll go 4-0, and most times i'll go barely above a 1.0 KDR, but i'm never near the bottom of the scoreboard. That's what i'm addicted to and what I base my performance off of. If I wasn't within the first three spots at least then I wasn't doing my job properly. Except those games where my team is just too good and nobody really needs healing and we're redlining them so nobody ever needs an up-link and everyone brings their own nanohives.
I'm finally back into Dust now that i'm past the "THIS STEEP GRIND" mindset and can focus on getting the sweet, sweet upgrades in my skills so I can get better logi-tools from the market. And i've been enlightened and found my code. That really helps.
My logi-code.
