In every FPS I have ever played, PC or Console, the first thing I do is find out if there is aim assist, then turn it off. As soon as the update was deployed in Dust 514, the first thing I did was go to System Operation and do just that. And yes, I use a DS3.
I hate aim assist for a variety of reasons; primarily, I because I like to play fast, reconnaissance roles and I hate snapping to targets while trying to scan over the battlefield. I also think it's exceptionally cheap, especially in games that ask for marksman skills. The last few iterations of my beloved Halo series really had me frustrated, especially 4, where the majority of weapons were carbine, implying some skillful aiming was required, but with aim assist on everything snapped to a headshot anyway. PVE or otherwise it just felt lame.
Now don't get me wrong, this isn't a post about how I am somehow better than everyone for not using aim assist. In fact I have nothing to show for it with a K/D under 1. I was very much so against the addition of aim assist a while back, but I support changes made to this game so I just sucked it up and learned to deal with it. I am also not judging anyone for using the aim assist either. I can fully understand how the aim assist can make the game feel smoother and a little bit more forgiving. I am not here to say having it on or off means anything about having any more skill.
Everyone loves to blame something for their failure to "get gud". I blame aim assist. Gone are my days of strafing around supressive fire. Gone are my days of ninja-ing cover to cover to shotgun my enemies in the face as they tried to reload. I can't even juke out an attacker to get to cover. It feels like their gun just follows me around...but then again I was never that good. At the end of the day I can find a way I could have been more tactical or subtle in my approach. So once again, not here to point fingers.
This is merely a poll...how many of you are using aim assist? No judgement, I just want to know.

I am not. I don't think aim assist is to blame for dying quickly though - the fixed hit detection has made a remarkable difference.

When the update adding aim assist first deployed I technically was using aim assist. When I pulled out my Laser Rifle, I realized that my shots were locked on and went to the options menu and disabled it.
And to answer the question, yes your frustration is justified.

There is no aim assist if you use a mouse, yet mouse is still better than DS3 + Aim Assist when sniping or trying to hit distant targets. I use a DS3 controller with a mouse next to me for those long shots.
I just donGÇÖt see how the DS3 could come anywhere near the precision of the mouse without aim assist. Of course I have been using a mouse since 1984, and have only been using DS3 since January 2013, so maybe that is part of the problem.

I use aim assist.
I tried a lot of tweaking to my analog sensitivity, and my aim in Chromosome was pretty solid sans aim assist, but the new analog sensitivity curve is too difficult, especially with a mixed long range short range fit. I like CQC, and I usually keep my DS3 analog sensitivity at 70 or above, so I can turn around in a reasonable time frame (though it is still pretty slow), but extreme long range aiming is still comically bad.
Lately I've been experimenting with hybrid tactical sniper + SMG to counter the future hoard of Rail Rifle users, and trying to track targets at range is just terrible, even with aim-assist enabled (the SMG with aim assist is deadly). The slightest analog knob movements will overshoot and overcorrect on a distant target, and usually the best thing to do is lead the target-wait until they move into the line of fire- then shoot. This is really frustrating when the target is stationary, and the sights just refuse to line up. - I know, get good, I'm just saying the sensitivity curve should be more gradual.

I refuse to play games with aim assist as the only option. I know how long its going to take for my reticle to get on target and when i should start shooting. EVERY GAME THAT HAS AIM ASSIST MESSES THIS UP to the put where i cannot adapt. I get like 1 or 1.5mm their and then it jumps forward but im still aiming as if there is no aim assist so i always go to far. Then I try to snap back to the target only to have the same thing happen so I decide to just loosely point at him and then he moves and the cicle begins a new. Its horrible and I always leave this includes halo 3.

I've played with and without and honestly can hardly tell a difference when it's on. If anything it screws up my shot when I'm leading a moving target and the aim assist is pushing twoard the target when I'm trying to lead the target. |

When it was first implemented I forgot I had to go turn it off. I was wondering why it felt like my controls were fighting me, until I remembered half way through a game and tried just putting my sights somewhere near them and low and behold the aim assist did all the work. I turned it off immediately afterwards. There was a post by silverback about this that I'm gonna go find. |

I will only ever accept no aim assist if Dust has 60FPS (AND NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER dipps below it) and has the most refined and perfect sticks control.
Good luck CCP :)

Fair enough. Perhaps with the future of Dust on the PS4. Right?

Nothing like taking that People's Elbow to the face because the aim assist decided that you wanted to shoot that awfully threatening Swarmer all the way on the other end of the map to turn you away from aim assist.

I use aim assist now also, and I didn't in the FPS I used to play. I did a couple of Videos a while back on the bolded part of your statement to try to express my frustration. It seems like a combination of strafe and rotation working together that I just can't adjust to well. I hope that we will get the ability to tweak the speed curves manually like was mentioned by Devs in a podcast I heard a while back. |

I can turn the AA on or off, there is no difference. Sometimes when the AA decides to work, it frustrates me because I'll be shooting at a target and my sight gets pulled to a guy past. My SCR only has so many shots it can give at a crack. If I don't land them right, the kill escapes, or I could die in battle. But that only happens about once every month. |

why do people feel the need to exaggerate aim assist like some uber 180 lock on to the guy behind you mechanic. unless they can get back chromosome like aim mechanics, aim assist is needed and tbh, i hardly ever notice it unless some spawns in front me. btw i only use ar on occasion, primarily shotgun

I run a DS3 with 100/100 sensitivity. the controller just moves too slowly. Until I can turn faster I'll have aim assist on. Though I also had it on because it always helps hit-detection with the shotguns.
Though I really just wish they would get rid of the "aim friction" used when sniping (sniper rifles do not have aim assist btw). that stupid aim friction makes it harder to aim then it helps. Until that goes away I'm a 100/100 sensitivity sniper, and still feel lke aiming is sluggish.
Can I just have Chromosome back? please?

I support aim assist.
It makes the game feel smoother and more enjoyable.
There are games where the aim assist is so exaggerated that I can't even play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaom3cdZv1c
This is not the case of DUST. I think that CCP did a great work with the aim assist. It feels natural and reasonable.

Aim assist can be very annoying for tankers aswell for expample you are having a railgun tank fight and the other guy seems to have good cover with just the top of his turret over the hill so he can shoot me and i have a very small hitbox to hit and what happens with aim assist it will keep trying to drag my shot into the middle of the tank but since he is turret glitching or head glitching with the turret it makes it almost impossible to aim where you want to i have mine turned off and still i notice that its not gone 100% aim assist needs to go we have good hit detection now right?

AA is rookie ****. But, in this game what's not? I don't blame the users, I blame the developers and their lack of experience in playing shooters, not to even mention their developing skills beyond a statistical version of Battleship Online.
Note: Sensitivity has nothing to do with Turn Speed. It determines how much you have to lean on the analogs to turn. Turn Speed is dictated by your Dropsuit and its Modules.
