How can you actually play against competition in DUST? You just lose ISK. The point is to gain ISK, therefore you can only play winning battles if you're like me and don't have ISK coming out of your ears.
Think about it, your deaths matter, a lot. To get ahead in DUST you have to only play winning battles and avoid losing battles.
This means you have to avoid competition, that's not how a game should be.
Just played WTF and died 5 times, got 50K isk somehow, went 3-5, how is that sustainable? It's either stomp the opposition or quit the game. Any new player knows this.
yet WTF can die 8 times in a pub match against randoms (LOL) yet they have ISK backing them up so they do what they want.
It's like rich people and poor people all going to the same supermarket being forced to pay the same prices.

HTFU Use standard gear, if you down them, you hurt their wallet. If they down you, they did almost nothing.
Psst: Standard gear suits cost around 8k. The average you get per match is 200k. Die 25 times before it becomes unprofitable. Seems legit to me. That's like half the clones in an Ambush match.
Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

I still maintain the opinion that DUST is unsustainable in losing matches.
I will give that a go, I will use a militia suit but will have to camp my ass off.
EDIT; but there is NO way I can beat PRO suits with PRO weapons without some kind of weaponry backing me up.
I'll see what I can use with an advanced SCR.

I joined late, killed 3 of them, all protosuits, got 50K ISK.
It's because ISK gain doesn't make any sense. I got 3.1M ISK in a pub once FFS. (video on my channel).
Went 33-2 with a SCR earlier and didn't even get 300k ISK
Oh and this account is new, I mean 3m SP new.

yeh I did, I flanked them hid behind a rock, charged up my SCR. But what does it matter when you're being perma-scanned by LLAVS and players?
Right after I died they dropped THREE precision strikes on the CRU.
Add a dampener or two? Forego armour when the enemy are using prototype scrambler rifles?????
I could do alright against some competition but I will STILL lose ISK.

Use cheaper fits...The gap of TTK has been shortened so much that even in a militia fit with no Proficiency, you could defeat the enemy.
Also 50K ISK? Wtf were you doing? I never make anywhere near that amount if I've played in the match for more than 5 minutes. You could be hacking crap, you could be just taking pot shots and getting kill-assists.
*Shrugs* Anyways, you gotta realize that after losing a certain amount of suits/ISK, all Dust players will get into the loss area instead of gain.
More than likely those proto stomping wouldn't keep proto stomping if they believe they're taking a loss from continuing to do it. I wouldn't do that crap if I believe I'm just gonna keep losing.

I run in the covenant assault suit, two enhanced shield extenders, two advanced armour plates with an exile AR and a toxin SMG to back it up. That suit totals just shy of 700 ehp. I generally have no problem going positive as long ad I'm not pushing objective to hard with no backup. Total cost is about 7k meaning I can die A LOT and still turn profit. Passive skills make a huge difrence in what you can get away with. |

Run starter fits that have been modified. 6K suit is really fun and takes the pressure off losing ISK. 6K suit * 5 deaths makes ISK. I am terrible and I can do it. You can make a good bit just doing that for a night or two or just the first few games to get some funding. I actually do much better with them because who cares about a free suit. I have a Gal Frontline with two enhanced and a basic reactive plate with 378 armor and 3/s armor rep @ 4.92 m/s that cost 5,730 ISK. It profits every time and can really profit if you get a good needle match.

My best pay out in BPO's was 450k
You are not going to generally win a BPO vs Proto battle unless you are really good so avoid going face to face with them. get behind them in order to kill them.
And like cat merc said unless you die like 25 times you will make a profit in BPO/Starter suits. and remember the higher tier suit you kill the better the isk payout.
For the Empire
Dual tanking is a sin
BPO's are bad for economy, Respec's are bad for the game. Want to fight about it?

Just run cheaper fits god damn it. It's not like the cheap suits will hold you back. I've seen plenty of professional own proto players with just militia gear. If they can do it, so can you.

My Gal is 528 ehp with reactive and 577 with scale but no reps. The 3hp/s does the difference in about 16 seconds and a round does it in about a second. If I was going to drop that 49 hp wouldn't help me but the rep would if I get away. 775 EHP if I run full enhanced plates.
7245 ISK for full enhanced plates. The 528 fit is better.

The point of DUST is to also manage your money. There is a reason why lower tier gear exists. They are not just stepping stones for better gear but also a means to save money.

A maxed out set of core skills makes even a stater fit bad and I would say that with a perfect AR branch a starter fit would push a mean weapon.

If you did 5 full rounds of sniper, you could probably get away with 1 or 2 deaths. Pot nearly a million isk and add a little variety to your game. If you cant hack the sniping.. I run with an 11k suit and make a profit. Basics mods and an advanced weapon. |

You only earned 50k isk because you joined late. The current isk earning mechanics have a ton to do with time in game. I believe that even a 0 wp game that you are in from the beginning will net you 100k isk. The wp you earn just boost your isk earning above that. I believe your wp relative to the rest of your team also plays a major role in determining your isk payout. The larger the the gap between your wp and that of the rest of your team the more WP you seem to earn.
Now, as far as your ability to make a profit I'll point out what the others have already said using slightly different language, perhaps it will be easier for you to understand.
Currently, having proto-gear is not an I win button. Sure, it makes your a bit more durable but that is measured in tiny fractions of time. I mean the difference in the time it takes to kill a proto assault (with a dual tank) vs the time it takes to skill a starter fit is probably only 1 - 1.5 seconds. Sure the weapon you're using, your skill bonuses, and any damage mods you may have all serve to shorten this time but .75 seconds to kill someone really isn't a big difference.
On my alt, which has 4 mil sp all devoted to tanks I can run about in the medic starter fit an be just about as successful as I can in my full proto gear all skills level 5 main. That means I have 0 sp in infantry skills but can still play effectively (though I do die a bunch more and I'm never going to get 40 kills in a match with it).
"That's impossible," you might respond to this news, "because I have all my skills devoted to infantry and I still get rocked."
There is, I'm going to guess one slight difference between me playing my no infantry skill alt and you playing your 3 mil sp in infantry alt., and it is a really simple one that makes a huge difference. Even when I play with my alt. I always run with a squad. Squadding up is the single most powerful thing you can do in this game. Once you've squadded up you need to stick together in a tight group. You'll get more kills, more assists and die less. All those militia AR pointed in the same direction throw out a heck of a lot of damage, enough to murder any proto-player and cause him to cry sweet salty tears.
I should also explain that in this starter fit it doesn't matter if I die at all. I could die 60 times in a match, I could be the sole reason my team looses, and I could still make a profit on the battle. Run a few battles like that and I have the money to pull out a tank, or in your case an better suit. Remeber KDR doesn't really mean much, especially if you're a solo player. SP and profit are what you should be all about and you'll definitely get the most profit from running starter fits.
"But I have better gear," you'll contend, "and I want to run it. There is no point in having it if I can't ever use it profitably."
Use it tactically. If your in a battle where you're clearly getting stomped on don't use gear that is going to cost money. Pull out the free stuff. Save the good gear for battles where you know if can help you make a difference. Also keep track of how many "good suits" suits you can loose and still make a profit. Don't let yourself get frustrated and pull out a proto-suit just because you are loosing, that is going to cost you a bundle of isk. Play a good suit or two but switch to cheap suits or free suits when you're nearing that 200k isk cost area, this will help you maintain a profitable mercing experience.
Finally, as Cat Merc tried to point out (and did a really nice job of by they way) if your enemy seems to be killing you due to scans, put on dampeners. If they seem to be tanked out beasts put on damage amplifiers. If they keep bringing out free LAV to roam the battle field in bring swarms. Adapt to the battlefield conditions and you'll be much more successful than if you just keep running the same fit and hoping that somehow you will magically start winning. Adapt or die as the EVE players say; a saying that couldn't be any more fitting for DUST.
