THIS
I guess this is a good indication (if there was any doubt or wonderment) of the deal between Sony and CCP. It's to PROVE something. That something is simply that SOE can squeeze money out of the player base through their F2P system thus PROVING SOE is a success because they are hurting since the good ol' days of Everquest.
No, not to develop a quality game as could have happened if CCP took the PC route. Only to keep tweaking things to keep up the microtransactions. DUST has already failed Sony on this front.
CoD, BF et al isn't what we should be comparing DUST to, its DC Online that is the model for DUST as a commodity. I hope this deal fails so CCP can move on to a serious, independent PC development plan.
That's how I see it. Discuss.

No. Now go away.
Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

Lol, no meaningful response? You didn't read the article did you? Fanbois.
This is pretty much the view of EVE Players when this deal was annouced anyway. The article just drives the point home.

Disagree respectfully. If it was a cash-grab, would it be free-to-play, where the only thing spending real money on is gear you can use earlier, but are the same as Isk variants, or (in future, and somewhat, now) things that are pretty ("Neo" Assault CK.0, "Neo" Logistics CK.0, et al)?
EDIT: They are, first and foremost, a business. First rule of business: Make a profit. Second rule: keep your customers happy. Failing, they are, on the second, but I still enjoy it.

The article just drives the point home. Well, let me ask you something. How expensive do you think servers are? How expensive do you think uber powerful military grade servers like tranquility are to maintain? How long would it take to recoup Dust 514's 20-30 million dollars investment?
A cash grab it is not, it would take a lot of time to recoup that investment. If it WAS a cash grab, CCP would just cut their losses right now and keep on with EVE because this game is on life support.

That's my point. Under Sony's F2P service this is a cash grab as far as Sony is concerned. It's not working out to be too lucrative though at this point. CCP is not in this deal just to get funds to make a better game. They could do that more effectively with subscriptions on the PC like EVE. Sony thought they could ***** them out.

Yes, as far as Sony is concerned. They make money off of the PSN cards, with which we buy Aurum. CCP could cut out the middleman, but then Sony wouldn't let them make it for PS3. I play DCUO, and it is a fun game, but, like Dust, it gets stale. I think that is the problem with Dust, atm., for the most part. Constant protostomping doesn't help, of course.

Is there a for profit business on the planet that isn't trying to make cash?
Seriously. What kind of boneheads do we have around here. While the game itself is free the expectation is that it can still turn a profit based on various types of micro-payment options. |

I wonder if Dust is just a test bed for future PC stuff (maybe PC Dust). I would imagine the PC crowd would expect better from a game than what we currently get. Maybe CCP is honing their FPS skills on us before taking a serious crack at it later down the road.
At this point I figure either A) CCP has a huge trick up its sleeve, B) They are doing like I said and honing their FPS skills on us, or C) They just have no idea how to balance the game.
I don't know which it is, but no, I don't think Dust is a cash grab. If it is, it's a **** poor one. |

The arguement isn't about profit. It's about who's wanting it from who and why. Sony's wanting to make a profit off of its SOE F2P market. CCP wants a profit to fund its game development. This, as the article suggests is not a good profit model for DUST to succeed in. It might be good for the time being for early development. It is not going to favor CCP in the long run for DUST to be taken seriously beyond just another SOE money stream for Sony and a bad rap for DUST.
Unless of course you like the idea of DUST being a DC Universe for the kiddies. You will not get the serious gamer base within this context. You will get CoD and worse. Apparently CoD is bad to the serious gamer. A DC Universe SOE style game is worse.
TL;DR WHO IS REALLY PULLING WHAT STRINGS?

It would suck if Dust moved to PC. I can run Eve just enough to do solo PvE, but I wouldn't be able to run Dust. I only got to experience a handful of months with MAG (the beginning months), but man, early on they were doing it right. I heard things got sketchy in the end, but what a great game. If Dust ever left the console I would be sad, but I would hope someone would pick up the torch on the console end. Deffinitely doable, a Kickstarter MAG 2 would be ******* awesome.
But since i'm already here, it would be nicer if CCP got their stuff together and gave us what we all thought we were getting. Space MAG, with super sweet action missiles. Thats what I wanted anyway (the Space MAG part). |

Have you actually played DCUO? I have quite a bit and it's an entirely different business model from Dust514. DCUO is massively pay to win and actually not really free to play but rather freemium. Allow me to explain: in DCUO you only get very basic access to end game content and can not take part in any player trade or even purchase items beyond a very limited value with in-game cash. Only after paying a certain small amount can you use trading but still only have limited access to in-game currency (even if you earn thousands, you can only carry a tiny amount at a time and the rest is locked away in your 'escrow' account, which you need to pay real money to access). The only way to get full access to player trading and full currency use is to pay a monthly subscription, which IMHO is far too expensive.
These currency limitations mean you have absolutely no way to get higher tier gear if you want to play entirely for free. But even beyond that DCUO also has tonnes upon tonnes of stuff to spend real money on and they shove it down your throat constantly with pop-up reminders and locked access signs that redirect you to the real money store. And even then on top of that there's paid DLC, at least half a dozen! This DLC locks non paying players out of the higher level missions, characters, gear, powers and some cool aesthetic stuff. They even give you a 'lair' but you can't do anything with it at all unless you get the extra DLC to do so! Oh yeah, and don't even think about the PVP server unless you're a paying customer because you will get your butt handed to you every single time.
Dust514 is absolutely nothing even remotely like DCUO. Granted DCUO is fun and there is a lot to do but the business model is horrendous for players. In Dust514 nothing is locked off from free players and anything that can be gained using real money can be equally obtained using in-game currency after spending a bit more time playing. This is the way free to play games should be.
TL:DR - there is just no comparison between Dust514 and DCUO.

Oh and just as a slight aside, even with all those juicy profits SOE has been making from DCUO, after 3 years (since beta began) the game is still horrendously buggy, crashes regularly and mission glitches destroy hours of progress. There was a really annoying audio dropout bug when I first started playing early this year - I found forum posts about it from much earlier; last I played (a few weeks ago), that same exact bug still existed. Good job SOE doesn't have any involvement in the development of Dust514 or this game would be even more messed up!
