So I just started playing this game, and I've got to say the KB/M controls are appalling. Why would you force users to use ONLY the arrow keys when in menus while the first person controls are set to WASD.
You know who doesn't like jumping all over the keyboard for no reason? Everyone.
Please, at least make the menu buttons re-assignable. It's insane to not have it implemented this way in the first place.
Also while on this note: can you PLEASE make the keyboard controls, by default, centered around the WASD location? Going over to -/+ just to go between tabs is also ludicrous. |

Agreed on that - WASD and Q/E instead of arrow keys and -/+ would be far better.
I also think 'F' should replace 'Enter' and 'R' should replace 'Backspace'.
We just really should have modifiable controls for the menus. I don't mind being forced to certain controls when in-game/first-person since they're set appropriately well at the moment, but for the menus...it could be SO much better. |

Bump...this needs to be changed asap...it definitely isn't something you can just get used to. |

Not to nitpick - but it's more than 6". Also, it's called ergonomics - look it up.
If you're going to add controls to a game, might as well do it right. |

Then rather than ask that I be forced to abandon my preference to be forced into your preference (I'm not that lazy or slow), simply resurrect the thread asking to be able to remap the keyboard.
Forced to abandon your preference?
For one - is that a joke, or do you actually enjoy whipping your forearm back and forth? You'd actually prefer to jump over to the arrow keys when you're going to deploy a vehicle? When you're switching fittings? In any other menu? You honestly want us to believe you'd RATHER do that, than keep your hand in one place to do the same task?
Second - I'm sorry, I guess it's my fault that you didn't actually read the full (short) post, and instead went straight to the TL;DR. As mentioned - at the very least, I want them re-assignable.
So tell me again - are you sure that you're "not that lazy or slow"? Give me a break buddy.. |

You know your use of certain words like appalling, insane, and ludicrous shed a certain light on your intent though you may not realize it.
Ok - maybe my choice of words were a tad strong. But I really did expect more coming to this game in terms of K/M usage. It's 2013 - countless FPS games have been made with K/M - yet CCP overlooked some of the absolute basics for key assignment. It's a complete mess - and I really don't know how anyone can disagree with that.
You can call me lazy if you want - but being a programmer, overlooking such simple things when making a game really does seem ludicrous to me - if not just lazy. For one, letting users re-assign keys is an extremely simple thing to implement. Yet, instead it's locked to a ridiculous layout - one that no-one should technically feel comfortable using (not until hours have been spent just trying to get used to it, anyway). As a general rule of thumb for key assignment: make two centralized key locations - one around WASD and one around the arrow keys. Instead, CCP when with a forced, mixed version of both.
In any case - I think you've mis-interpreted the in-betweens. I expected some basics - instead I got a mess. I play the game anyway, but knowing such a tiny fix could make a big difference in playability just really drives me nuts. In the end - I don't care what the default is so long as I get the layout that I want, and others get theirs as well. |
