I'd read that there was an audio cue for cooking grenades months and months, ago, but only yesterday when I had the volume up unusually loud (for me) could I hear it. Playing at a higher volume is frequently not an option for me. It seems like a visual indicator would be nice for players with hearing loss/deafness as well.
RDVs are a failed experiment - can't we just remove them from the game?

No. Grenades don't need to be any easier to use. Learn to count. You don't even need to listen to the cue, just count to three and throw.

Count, the sound doesn't even sync half the time anyways.
Madness is the emergency exit. You can just step outside, and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened.

It's not about easier...I presume most players are able to hear the audio well enough anyway...it's about removing a disadvantage for the remainder of the players.
Once you get a feel for them, you don't really need any reminder, visual or audio...and I'm pretty much at that point now. Before getting to that level of familiarity, the advice to "count" is useless because you don't know how quickly to count. Getting to that point, getting the rhythm in your bones, is presumably aided by the ticks you can hear now.
I think a case could be made for removing the audio cue...that would level the playing field, which is root problem here. But, really, I think you're wrong to avoiding making them easier, based on this reasoning: Extra Credits vid (most relevantly 2:20-3:00). That's not to say I think grenades are fine...I hate Core Locus spam, but that's a different problem with unrelated solutions.

I don't like the idea of cooking grenades, anyway. But that's just me.
Even so, why a timer? That's just silly.

There already is a time, though - it's just audio only.
I think I'm actually in your camp regarding no cooking, actually, but if cooking's going to be a thing, and there's an audio cue for it, supplement it with a visual.

Because thats the way real grenades actually work, other than the (fused to go off on impact) ones.
And 'cooking' them is the way real grenades get used.
So no. It's not "silly".

I see no reason why there couldnGÇÖt be a visual cue, as OP stated some people might not have audio cue for whatever reason, so this could help them.
Most of the grenades in Dust have nice circular design, making it easy to add a ring which ticks up or down.

1) Don't tell them everything you planned.

So no. It's not "silly". Real military personnel are trained not to cook grenades. Because all it takes is one crappy fuse to blow up 3 people. I say take out cooking entirely, and reduce the explosion timer by 25%. |

The grenade will blow up after five seconds, 4 seconds is the absolute latest you can throw a grenade and not take damage.
The audio ticking is missing most of the time(not sure why but more often than not I don't hear it - I have the timing pretty close now though so don't need it).
As for the visual cue, sure, a line of 3 LEDs on the side of the grenade would be fine(green, orange, red). |
