Hello, Capsuleer Reav!!
I am one of the many Dust PS3 console players who don't necessarily want to play EVE ourselves, but understand very clearly that the interaction of you and your fellow EVE pilots is what can (will?) enlarge our battlefield maps and thus allow us to really utilize any team strategies and equipment fittings we've developed.
I'd like to suggest as a supplement or extension to your idea, that CCP devise a means of "offering" EVE pilots purchase-able structures and sockets to build Command Center 9F-1P2 with. (I'm not sure, but I suspect your players have similar choices when looking to purchase a docking station or ore-refiner platform, etc).
At EVE's point of view, this gives you complexities to consider: should I buy the sockets that have the fort-walls and corner gun installations to make my Industry Facility more defendable, or use my ISK to fit a larger biomass socket and increase my facility's profit output as the risk of making it harder for a handful of paid mercs to defend? (Remember the "City-builder" PC games of the 90's?)
At DUST's point of view, this gives me a constantly unique array of battlefields I can cut my combat teeth on, maps tailor-designed by EVE players. It ramps up the fun challenge my mercs' will have acclimating to maps that won't easliy become predicatble, and because we can't predict the map layout, the element of combat risks stay nice and high.
Instead of the maps being rigidly stamped out by CCP, your EVE owners pick the size and pieces (CCP just determines the planet terrain and sockets you can buy). This gives EVE players a stronger sense of personal ownership (you didn't just buy a generic Command Center... you fitted that baby together yourself, and no shnook from Angel-I is gonna take it from you, dang-it! Grrr!)
You know EVE's structure better than I do, Reav. If something like this "purchase the parts for your facility" idea is do-able, maybe your EVE players can rally to carry the devs to carry it through somehow. Cheers! |

....First, let me say this: Reav I bow on one knee to you, for the post you just gave.
I don't need to know their names to know that a ton of us at the Playstation end have been playing Dust EAGER for that connection to EVE, but also completely in the dark and itching to get educated about what levels of manipulation your players have EVE Online. NOT the combat-related manipulation (we have our own version of that in Dust), but what level of manipulation EVE Online gives when capsuleers secure ownership of these "districts", as Dust calls them. For the most part we have NO idea if it's a fair comparison to buying a hotel in Monopoly. And if you get to "SEE" at least a bird's eye grid of your owned district (similar to the holo-terrain map we used to have in Dust's warbarge--you know what I mean, if you've seen it). For the past six months all I had was a mental picture of that famous religous painting with the heavenly god at one end and ground-based man at the other end, with their two stretched out index fingers about to touch and go "BAMM!!" ...but we have no firm picture the details of the "bamm".
So you have no idea what a great contribution you just made, Reav. And if the other mercs have sharp enough eyes to catch this thread, they're gonna be lighting up your "Like"-button like you never had in you entire life.
--Your idea of the Server "sussing" your colony and setting the structure to suite terrain/race-association/kilometer size is more feasible than the capsuleer-directly-picks-his-structures suggestion I made, and still delivers the variety of map prospects Dust players will need.
--Your idea of this as being the enabler for "Drone Infestation" and similar PvE matches is exactly what I like to think CCP is think of too, and there's a theory that those two bottom categories in the Dust Battlefinder menu are SPECIFICALLY created to exclusively run the PvE contract you just described. (but, alas... it's just a theory).
--The idea about being able to walk through the facility you created is, dangerous prize however. I'm not sure of the details, but I heard that the option to "explore the corridors in your EVE vessel" a while back was protested by players. Don't misunderstand, Dust players like the idea too... thoughts like being able to stroll an EVE capsuleer's ship just before our deployment to the surface makes many merc players DROOL. We've already seen the distinct animation differences between when we activate an automated orbital strike, and the actual orbital strike fired from a REAL EVE ship at the other end---Reav, if we ever looked up in the clouds during one of those strikes and saw a tiny MINMATAR DESTROYER twinkling up there, we'd ORGASM! (uups, er, I can say that word, right? can I? --oh crap).
But MAYBE there's more for the game to gain by keeping a subtle gap between us, near but still too far to cross, giving each of us this envious admiration for the other player's game. I can't quite get up high enough to your ship to do what you do.... and teasingly you just can't quite get your toe to reach the surface and do what I do. ...Such a cool and evil-genius way to keep both players hooked like fish.
...Thumbs up on your ideas, Capsuleer! I hope that is exactly how the games turn out next year. |

Mac Dac wrote:I love this idea! Thats exctally what i envisioned as a connection to EVE...
But alas, I find it hard to see interaction like this in a year or even three.
Hold onto FAITH, Mac Dac.
Hold onto faith.
