So I had an idea that new players could play the academy with an unlimited number of a few dozen free "starter" fits and vehicles that were all proto with max skills. These would have a mix of hives, uplinks, scanners, weapons etc. They would only be usable in the academy up to x WPs, and then the player would be returned to the "real" game, ready to spend the SP they banked up. The thinking is they could experience everything DUST has to offer right from the start, make decisions about where they want to go with their SP and get an appreciation for the depth of gameplay to be had with time, effort and ISK.
The biggest downside I could think of is experienced players making throwaway toons to stomp people playing their first match, and also new players being overwhelmed with all of the stuff/options available. I still think this is still infinitely preferable to what we have now, with new players thinking DUST only has ARs (which is kind of true ATM, but hopefully gettting addressed). It might also prevent new players from dumping all of their SP into plasma launchers because they look/sound cool.
What do you guys think?

I'm surprised this doesn't have more likes. I glanced at this and then looked at other threads. This idea just makes sense and should garner more than my measly moral support.

This suggestion will just make it harder on fresh academy "graduates" because they would not only have to contend with people equipped with better gear, but also adapt to low tier gear they're not used to using.
Not to mention that it would only serve to confuse them more.
Blatant Dust_514 recruiting in the silliest of places. :P

Not to mention that it would only serve to confuse them more. I think some of these issues can be resolved. First, the game should explain what's happening: the new player is being put in a simulation with max skills and access to simulated max gear so the player can experience many different options to find a style they like. The player should be encouraged (and rewarded) for trying all fits. It should be made clear that after the simulation rounds are over, they will be entering real combat with their actual (low) skills. Second, this will be a fairly short process (no more than 5-10 matches) and if they're trying out all of the different suit/weapon/vehicle options, they won't really have "adapted" to anything, it will all feel very new.
Once the simulation rounds are over, the player can create their character (race/bloodline/name) and will have the option to play in academy matches (in addition to all of the regular matches if they choose). These matches will be restricted to players with less than X SP (probably somewhere between 2- 5 million SP). They will have no weekly SP cap until they graduate.
The idea is that it "sucks in" new players, sort of like a crack dealer giving you the first hit for free. It also shelters them from bad matchmaking while they are new and gives them the chance to build the foundation of their character in relative safety, while not restricting them from participating in more hardcore matches if they so choose.
I do think it might be confusing/overwhelming somewhat, but good tutorial design, cutscenes and possibly a tutorial storyline could help anchor their experience.

Well said .
As the system is set up now , you can actually max out of the academy in three matches . Using proto would only increase the likelihood of maxing out in one or two matches .
This would only serve as a tease also , for one knows how long it actually takes to acquire proto and once you experienced that it's hard to want to let that feeling go . Why torment them even more .
I don't want prototype until it's MINE and the only way that I can loose it is in battle from death .
I appreciate the prototype that I have and fought long and hard to get it . It's worth the fight and even more worth it to keep or at least have access to .
