The current ranges are no where near realistic. There is nothing wrong with the current range for the AR. The HMG is a joke for how little range it has. If we had it my way we'd go back to chomo ranges.
Maybe you should've pointed out that you think half of the guns in the game need a range buff and the AR should remain the same, then? Because an issue does exist with AR range, whether or not its because the other guns have too little range. No one will care in 1.7, anyway, when the Scrambler Rifle will be going from a 55m range to an 80m one. You'll REALLY be dieing from half way across the map, then.

The Shotgun would be more viable if it had a longer range. The HMG would be viable if it had a longer range. The Laser Rifle would be viable if it wasn't being out DPS'd in optimal range by two guys with Assault Rifles. Yes, there aren't many similar viable guns. However, if you think the HMG has a pathetic range, then you must think that all these other guns do, too. The AR is the king of the DPS hill in 95% of situations, aside from the Scrambler Rifle, which still takes more skill to use effectively. It turns Dust 514 into a point and click adventure where everyone dies in seconds up to 60m from a recoiless (it doesn't have recoil when you can pulse the trigger, sorry) laser. As I said, no one will care in 1.7 anyway. All the other Rifles are longer ranges and the TAR, the only comparably ranged variant, is getting a range nerf, while both Scrambler Rifles are getting a 20-30m range buff.

ScR, RR, CR, PR they are all variants of the same class of weapon (AR) with virtually no significant difference between them. The SG is always going to be a situational weapon and not viable out side of very specific builds/suit classes. This was even so back in chromo, when it actually did have range. HMG is utterly pathetic. LR needs a buff to optimal range as well as a damage buff. Haven't played the MD since chromo and I rarely see them, so I can't speak to the current state of the weapon. My point is this the cure to "AR 514" has nothing to do with fixes. It require the addition of actual other viable weapons options. Currently there is the AR, MD, and LR. Regardless of the current state of these weapons. As well regardless of a balanced buff to the MD and LR, these weapons have severe natural drawbacks the an AR user will never have to deal with, thus rendering them perpetually at a dis advantage. What we need is actual other viable options to the AR.
I completely agree that we need more weapons that are not essentially variants to the Assault Rifle. However, considering the fact that the AR has no drawbacks and has a higher damage output than everything but Scrambler Rifles and HMGs at 5m (excluding 1/2 hit kills), it needs some kind of adjustment. One of these is damage drop off. I think that most guns need a sharper drop off to further solidify their niches and the Assault Rifle is the first to go. It wouldn't matter now, anyway, because 1.7 is coming out with new, longer ranged weapons that are basically Assault Rifles.
