Greetings, Sentient! I'm not sure how long you've been playing Dust 514, but I can safely assume you're a diehard classic FPS gamer! (I was a fan of KZ when that "wonderful game of race hatred in the outer planets" came out for PS2--LOVE ALMOST EVERYTHING KZ!)
But like you expressed on the side, KZ and Dust are SO FAR from each other in point of view... KZ is close to CLASSIC proven FPS design,... and Dust is, well... still something so different in its purpose that we as players are STILL not sure yet where we're being taken, and the only thing we ARE sure of is that the game is frequently adverse to our classic-thinking:
1. Classic FPS give you clearly-cut combat roles... Dust says pick your modules to make your "role" more unique but less clear-cut. 2. Classic FPS makes your role determine your available (and uncomplicated) inventory... Dust says feel free to learn and operate any of 400+ items, to forget your job-type and build a 'career' of role-crossing knowlege. 3. Classic FPS requires you to grind your skill at the controller buttons to master the game... Dust gave the most controversial controller "aim assist" I've ever come across; they practically 'automate' your controller grind, and instead give you some seroius math grinding that my old FPS's never tried with their players.
I can't be sure if your "classic game" (right phrase?) suggestions would actually improve THIS game. A decreasing percentage of us, especially Newberrys (which is why I wasn't sure how long you've been at Dust) still want to make the game better match the classic FPS style, so they can get on with what they know--it's the style they've grown comfortable with, and LOL, Dust is a VERY un-comfortable game.
But, I actually LIKE points 1 through 3 above. CCP CLAIMED this ride was gonna be "different" and they are standing true in a way that's got me hooked. I think I know the valid place you're suggestions are coming from, but I don't mind if Dust remains "a really different place to go to" from that place.

As far as Dust' challenging structure;- I beg to differ there isnt any and if at all there is any it is its immensely longggggg grind that could me made completely useless by CCP just because they decide to change it without giving any respecs. I have played Dust from the time it was releasde in Beta. I have lost a PS3 to the good old hard freezes. Anyone remember those days? Im just saying;- challenges can be brought up in lots of other ways. A lot of good ideas are mentioned in this post. You can just take a few and make the game better to digest.
YES, I remember the old hard freezes---smack in the last 3 minutes of grueling LEVEL 17 (NNNOOO, God--- What the front yard!!). So yep, you ARE a classic FPS-er Sentient!
No, by "challenging" I meant that Dust just keeps (for better and worser sometimes) messing with actual game formulas/designs what we "really strongly believe" shouldn't be messed with because we've had first-hand experience with their success in at least two dozen over-the-counter titles. ...And I can't help wondering if the 'success' is from us playing those FPS's so addictively because there wasn't really any OTHER concept design at the time that could 'fix' its own wrong decisions on the fly each month. I'm not sure a "new idea in FPS" ever had a chance in the old over the counter market--once you buy it and it's lousy, you tell your friends and the game is deceased. The "free-to-play" formula that Dust is using is (in my limited mind) the first good chance a dev has to propose oddly-different game designs and SURVIVE long enough to grab a band-aid, retract a wrong experiment, and buy time for the good experiments to grow on us (maybe jaded?) players. THAT'S a king-size challenge... and you can tell it in threads and posts we make that, that challenge bothers us.
I keep thinking, I've enjoyed years of rocking FPS titles, but, yeah okay, I can entertain this "different" thing for a while---CCP, show me what you've got in mind (...and LOL, I'll try my best not to want my good ole' KZ back until I've given you a long fair chance).
But hey, Sentient, you didn't say: So far are you mostly thumbs up on what they've done so far, or mostly down? |

I maybe frustrated but Im not stupid and thats why I still troll the forums. I understand the mechanics with the problems with Unreal Engine integration with the Eve side of things. Eve by far is a great game and its CCP's bread and butter. For them fixing Dust should not be too much of a problem if it were not for the integration with Eve. But the Devs in China got to go. If I remember correctly CCP Rattani is uprooting his family and taking them to mainland China to fix the mess the Devs in China have made. Mad props to that if thats true. That and the number of broken promises they have made. If you cant keep a promise dont make one. Reasonable people understand. Fanboi's wont care! Most of the clowns on the forums dont really give a kitten. So you see CCP is loosing the reasonable ones and those are the ones that dont mind shelling out the $$$ for the game. Take for example the alliance EoN. Eon had over 1500 active members playing Dust at one point in time. That has reduced to less than a 100 actively playing Dust. The rest are on other games. Essentially if you look at it CCP has lost about 1400 active players just from a single alliance. They are not retaining any of the newer players. No one likes to be pub stomped. Simple measures is all it takes to keep everyone happy.
I can't find a way to argue with that, Sentient. I posted in another thread that the long grueling span of "development-during-gameplay" has POSSIBLY culled off a percentage of players that a heavily-team-reliant game like Dust would be better off NOT having in its community... but that thought might be just prejudiced rubbish in my head---there's no way for me to claim a judgement like that.
The population we start off with when we finally merge with EVE will either be better for the gameplay innovations we felt the impulse to endure, or worse due to the possible calibre of players who left the game earlier (and need months of skilling to catch up if they rejoin).
I will say, in the next few months whether this game will stay stubborn or not, ultimately will win or not (I think it'll win),... these innovation months have been an interesting ride.
( I remember running to a downed buddy in Patch 1.2, and 'jucking' him with the early nano-injector 20 times and he's still lying unrevived and bleeding down---juck-juck-juck, "this mickey mouse needle isn't working--oh crap, here comes some bad guys--come on man, wake up, wake up--juck-juck-juck-juck--!"...and then reading somewhere, YOU HAVE TO GO OVER TO HIS FOOT.. AND STICK IT IN THERE--it's the ONLY place that works! NO previous fps game could crack me up with situations like that--hands down.)
Yeah Sentient... I think we're both not stupid |
